• England are set to face defending champions Argentina in the semi-finals of the World Cup in Atlanta on Wednesday.
• It looks set to be a difficult task for England given that Argentina have won all five of their previous World Cup semi-finals in 1978, 1986, 1990, 2014 and 2022 respectively.
• Argentina also reached the final in the inaugural World Cup in 1930, although there was no official semi-final for that tournament.
• Argentina have gone on to win the World Cup three times in 1978, 1986 and 2022, while they finished runners-up in 1930, 1990 and 2014.
• England have appeared in three previous semi-finals in 1966, 1990 and 2018, winning the former before losing the latter two. They went on to win the World Cup for the only time to date in 1966 on home soil.
