Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has refused to confirm whether first-choice goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez will play in the World Cup holders' opening match against Algeria on Tuesday.
"I have not yet told the players who will play. If he feels the way he has in recent days, he will play. But we have to wait and see," Scaloni told a pre-match news conference on Monday.
Martínez broke a finger in the Europa League final win for his club Aston Villa and has had problems in training.
All eyes in Kansas City will once again be on Lionel Messi. It is a record-equalling sixth World Cup for the captain and, in all likelihood, his last.
"It is always an honour to play with the greatest footballer of all time. We want to be there for him, we want to serve him," veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi said.
