Armed Forces’ boxers successfully retain title

Kota Kinabalu: The Armed Forces boxing squad successfully defended their overall title at the 65th Mayor Cup Boxing Championship organised by Sabah Boxing Association (Saba) at the Damai Multi-purpose hall here last weekend.

The team from the Fifth Infantry Division in Lok Kawi camp took the title with their total haul of four golds, three silvers and four bronzes.

In second place were the Penampang team with three golds, one silver and one bronze followed by Tambunan with two golds, three silvers and one bronze.

The four-day competition was officiated by Lifred Kong representing City Mayor Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip who is also SBA’s patron.

She hopes SBA will be able to identify potential boxers to represent the State in the Malaysia Cup Championship scheduled on October 4-10.

The closing ceremony was graced by ex-SBA president and former State deputy speaker Datuk George Ginibun who commended Orlando for his long service to the sport in the State.

Meanwhile, Orlando said they will choose the best boxers from the competition and will have both the men and women teams representing the State in the Malaysia Cup competition.

He also thanked Major General Datuk Abdul Rahman A. Wahab for his help through the Fifth Infantry Division in providing logistic, medical support and services throughout the tournament.
