Army foils major drug smuggling attempt, arresting a Thai man and confiscating 331kg of suspected methamphetamine near Kuala Nerang.

KUALA NERANG: The Malaysian Army has foiled a major drug smuggling attempt, seizing over RM10.9 million worth of suspected methamphetamine in Kedah.

The operation, conducted at 4.30am yesterday, is the largest drug seizure recorded by the army this year.

Led by Captain Muhammad Zulharif Abdul Rahim, a team from the Fourth Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment arrested a suspicious Thai man about 1.2 kilometres from Camp Sahara.

A search of the man yielded a walkie-talkie, a machete, a waist bag and a torchlight.

Further checks along the suspect’s route at 7am uncovered 331 packages containing crystalline chunks and powder believed to be methamphetamine.

Each one-kilogramme package is valued at approximately RM33,000, bringing the total seizure to RM10.923 million.

The suspect and all seized items were handed over to the Padang Terap district police headquarters for further investigation.
