Arrest made after major fire breaks out at Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest' mountain retreat in Bavaria

One person has been arrested after a major fire broke out at Adolf Hitler's mountain retreat in the German state of Bavaria.

According to Bavarian police, the blaze at the alpine resort - known as the "Eagle's Nest" in English or "Kehlsteinhaus" in German - began on Friday evening.

A fire alarm was raised at around 9:15 pm, with firefighters reporting "clearly visible" flames as they approached the site, finding it "fully ablaze" on arrival, police said.

"The fire service’s extensive fire-fighting operations are still ongoing. So far, no people have been found inside the Kehlsteinhaus – at this stage, no one has been injured as a result of the fire," a statement from the force read.

"Shortly after the fire broke out, a suspect came to the attention of the investigators. This person has been taken into custody. Whether the individual is connected to the fire is currently the subject of the criminal investigation," it added.

More than 200 emergency responders were deployed to the scene.

A no-fly zone for drones has also been declared, whilst hikers have been asked to give the area a wide berth, per police.

The building, completed in 1938, was designed to be used as a retreat for Nazi officials, although it was rarely used by Hitler himself.

This is a developing story. Please check back here for details.
