TAWAU: Police arrested a 20-year-old local suspected of threatening to kill his mother and choking his grandmother during a domestic disturbance in Kg Sungai Tuda, Kalabakan, in June.
“The suspect was detained at about 6pm in front of a house in the village on Friday,” said Tawau District Police Chief ACP Rosdi Mat Jusoh.
Rosdi said the suspect was arrested to assist investigations into a police report lodged on June 24 involving an offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
He said the incident is believed to have occurred on June 23 at about 11pm when the suspect’s younger brother received a call from their mother informing him that the suspect was causing a disturbance at their family home.
The suspect allegedly threatened to kill his mother and also choked his grandmother’s neck during the incident, Rosdi said.
He said that upon arriving at the house, the suspect’s brother found him still in an agitated state and attempted to calm him down and restrain him to prevent the situation from worsening.
However, a struggle broke out between the two brothers, leaving the younger brother injured, Rosdi said.
He said the suspect was then ordered to leave the house as he was believed to be holding a spanner that was feared to pose a threat to the safety of family members.
The suspect has been detained to assist further investigations, including undergoing an initial urine screening test, he added.
Rosdi said police will not compromise on any form of threat or aggressive behaviour that could endanger public safety, including cases involving one’s own family members.
He advised members of the public to immediately alert police of any security threats so that appropriate action can be taken.
