Arsenal v Leeds LIVE: Bruno Guimaraes stunner earns champions hard-fought Premier League win

Arsenal fought back from behind to secure a hard-earned win over Leeds United on their Premier League return.

After an extended international break, Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to find fluency against the impressive visitors, and looked like they might slip to a second successive defeat when James Justin fired Leeds into a deserved second-half lead. But Riccardo Calafiori soon levelled affairs, before Bruno Guimaraes finished off a stunning team goal to take the three points.

Guimaraes had been used off the bench in an illustration of the squad depth available to Arteta, overseeing his first game since signing a new contract at the club. Victory leaves the champions level on points with Manchester City, who play on Sunday, at the top of the table – although it remains to be seen what punishment their title rivals could face after the seismic verdict.

The Bruno Guimaraes moment that showed why Arsenal remain Premier League favourites

14:44 , PA

Arsenal struck twice in eight second-half minutes to secure a comeback 2-1 win against Leeds at the Emirates Stadium and move level on points with Manchester City at the Premier League summit.

After a thumping 3-0 defeat at Brighton before the international break, Mikel Arteta’s side were staring at a second shock loss in as many matches after James Justin fired the visitors ahead with 55 minutes gone.

However, Riccardo Calafiori drew the champions level when he converted Ben White’s header from close range in the 62nd minute, before substitute Bruno Guimaraes struck the decisive blow just six minutes after he came off the bench.

Mikel Arteta offers his thoughts

14:49 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“Before the game, we talked about two things: the challenge ahead, and to restore our identity and be ourselves again,” the Arsenal boss says. “We weren’t pleased with what we did against Brighton, and today was a chance to put that right. We reacted in the manner we expected.

“They are extremely well organised, very physical, committed in everything they do. They are a threat. You keep fouling them or give them throw-ins and set-pieces, they are incredible with the way they attack the box. They could have punished us in the first half. This is a testament to the league.

“When you play 12.30 at home and go 1-0 down, you have to restore a lot of things. The energy is one of them. We had an incredible response. It made a difference to help us win the game.”

 (Reuters)

And here is Bruno Guimaraes speaking to TNT Sports

14:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

“I feel unbelievable. Against Brighton, we were not at the right level and today the mentality was mostly back. An important goal, three important points, I’m very happy.

“It’s a great feeling. It’s important that when I am on the pitch I give my best and a bit of a headache for the manager. Three points is always welcome.

“It’s a new challenge for me. For me, the most important thing for Bruno is to go on the pitch and play my football.”

FT: Arsenal 2-1 Leeds

14:29 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A hard-fought success for Arsenal, but three points nonetheless. Below their best for an hour, Mikel Arteta’s side lifted their level to come from behind after James Justin’s opener – and it obviously helps to have players of Bruno Guimaraes’ quality to come on.

Here is that lovely winner:

FULL TIME! Arsenal 2-1 Leeds

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 90 + 5 minutes

14:25 , Harry Latham-Coyle

It should have been three! Bukayo Saka is sprung by Viktor Gyokeres, but can’t beat James Trafford in the one-on-one situation. He seemed a touch hesitant, oddly, and Trafford palms it away.

Still, that’ll be that!

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 90 + 4 minutes

14:24 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Leeds throw bodies forward and the ball follows them via Ethan Ampadu’s long hurl from the touchline. Arsenal have it well marshalled.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 90 + 2 minutes

14:22 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Why has Viktor Gyokeres not hit it? James Trafford gets himself in a right mess 35 yards from goal, leaving it agape as Gyokeres dispossesses him. The striker appears to open up the angle for a shot, but chooses not to, twisting and turning unnecessarily before eventually running aground.

Curious. That’s the sort of opportunity forwards usually gobble up.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 90 minutes

14:20 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The last Arsenal change is another sign of their depth: World Cup winner Mikel Merino replaces Martin Odegaard.

Five more minutes between them and victory.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 89 minutes

14:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ah, a chance for Leeds passed up. Dominic Calvert-Lewin latches on to a long hoist, though can’t quite find Brenden Aaronson on the follow-up. Perhaps a vital touch from an Arsenal defender before it reached him?

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 85 minutes

14:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Arsenal appear to have complete control of the contest, bopping the ball about with relative comfort.

Jayden Bogle and Nico Elvedi take leave for Leeds. Jaka Bijol and Jean-Matteo Bahoya come on.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 82 minutes

14:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

How has that not gone in? My, oh my, that seemed a certain goal, Declan Rice gloriously delicate as he dances along the byline. His low ball rattles the shins of Tarik Muharemovic and Martin Odegaard but somehow doesn’t ruffle the net, with James Trafford able to gratefully grasp at it.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 81 minutes

14:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle

New man Nmecha does very well to win a throw-in having been trapped in by a cloak of Arsenal pressers. They won’t much mind, though, given he was inside his own half.

Piero Hincapie comes on for Riccardo Calafiori.

 (Reuters)

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 80 minutes

14:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That change means Leeds have gone to a flat back four, which may potentially leave a bit more space for Arsenal to exploit as the visitors chase an equaliser.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 79 minutes

14:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That’s the last act for the Leeds goalscorer. Lukas Nmecha is thrown on.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 77 minutes

14:08 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Diligent work down the left earns Leeds a free kick high up, about level with the penalty spot. Up come the bigger blokes to contest it – unsuccessfully, with Declan Rice heading away.

James Justin takes a booking by hauling down Bruno Guimaraes as Arsenal attempted to escape on the counter.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 75 minutes

14:05 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That might have settled it! Bukayo Saka zips a shot two yards over the crossbar after cutting in onto that left foot of his.

Arsenal 2-1 Leeds, 72 minutes

14:02 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Sparked into life by that Leeds opener, Arsenal have shown their capacity to lift things in the last 10 minutes.

Ao Tanaka and Noah Okafor are replaced by Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson as Daniel Farke rolls his Leeds dice.

GOAL! ARSENAL 2-1 Leeds (Bruno Guimaraes, 70 minutes)

14:01 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A lovely, lovely goal! Arsenal lead!

It all starts with a Bruno Guimaraes nutmeg, and it’s the Brazilian midfielder who finishes it off. Martin Odegaard connects with Declan Rice, who backheels deftly for an arriving Guimaraes 25 yards out. An arrowed finish into the bottom corner – sumptuous!

 (Getty)

Arsenal 1-1 Leeds, 69 minutes

13:58 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Daniel Farke appears ready to answer with an alteration or two. Harry Wilson may well be one of those coming on.

 (Reuters)

Arsenal 1-1 Leeds, 67 minutes

13:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Sliced wildly away! Riccardo Calafiori went for power as the ball broke to him in the ‘D’, but skews it off the outside of his left boot.

Arsenal 1-1 Leeds, 66 minutes

13:56 , Harry Latham-Coyle

And still Leeds are pushed further and further back. Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard are starting to exert their influence, and a cross is headed behind for another corner, which Bukayo Saka will deliver.

Arsenal 1-1 Leeds, 65 minutes

13:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Arsenal keep the pressure on. Ethan Ampadu has to slide behind to prevent another good chance.

Arsenal 1-1 Leeds, 64 minutes

13:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mikel Arteta makes those changes anyway. Bruno Guimaraes, Viktor Gyokeres and Jurrien Timber replace Myles Lewis-Skelly, Kai Havertz and Ben White.

GOAL! ARSENAL 1-1 Leeds (Riccardo Calafiori, 62 minutes)

13:53 , Harry Latham-Coyle

But that changes the complexion of things! Riccardo Calafiori finds a leveller!

It’s a simple ball to the back post from Noni Madueke but Ben White has not been tracked, and is able to pick his target with a header back the other way. Calafiori is the ideal recipient, gambling with a run through the middle and side-footing home from six yards.

 (Reuters)

Arsenal 0-1 Leeds, 61 minutes

13:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Four changes, Mikel? It certainly appears so with a quartet of Arsenal replacements stripped and ready. Although Eberechi Eze appears to have been told to sit down again on the bench.

Arsenal 0-1 Leeds, 60 minutes

13:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mikel Arteta is readying changes, as, you feel, he had to.

Arsenal 0-1 Leeds, 57 minutes

13:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Just reward for Leeds, that, but now comes a different challenge. They can’t afford to retreat into their shell – and immediately show that they won’t with Dominic Calvert-Lewin taking a long pass on his chest and then nearly getting a return from Jaden Bogle as he steals in at the far post.

GOAL! Arsenal 0-1 LEEDS (James Justin, 55 minutes)

13:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Leeds break the deadlock! And you cannot say that hasn’t been deserved. Their wing-backs have caused problems all afternoon and that is their route to the opener, first Gabriel Gudmundsson breaking to the byline with a surging run down the left and then James Justin in sharply down the other side to plant a finish home.

Gabriel tried desperately to flick it away with his head but only succeeds in guiding it into the top corner, with David Raya out of the picture. The champions trail!

 (Getty)

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 54 minutes

13:44 , Harry Latham-Coyle

How soon will Mikel Arteta go to his bench? There’s no Christos Tzolis, of course, due to injury, but still plenty of quality in reserve nonetheless.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 53 minutes

13:43 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Tipped over! A vital flick of the fingers from David Raya as Ao Tanaka sends an absolute thunderbolt towards him. That was travelling.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 52 minutes

13:41 , Harry Latham-Coyle

An Arsenal chance! Martin Odegaard doesn’t quite catch his drive from 20 yards after Leeds had been opened up down the left, allowing a sprawling James Trafford to get across to it.

And that’s not far away at the other end! James Justin curls one with his left foot a yard or so wide of David Raya’s right-hand post.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 50 minutes

13:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Daniel Farke seems to be feeling the autumn chill after an extended British summer, a big thick black coat now zipped up as he glowers into the middle distance. There have been a fair few scowls, too, from the Leeds manager today.

Daniel Farke (AP)

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 48 minutes

13:38 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Bukayo Saka heads a deep Noni Madueke cross in the vague vicinity of the goal. James Trafford watches it on to the back of the roof of his net. A poor ball from Madueke, really, never likely to cause much alarm.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 46 minutes

13:37 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ben White runs out of room with spin on the clipped pass to him taking it out of play.

Second half...

13:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The players are back out there, seemingly with no changes. Underway again.

HT: Arsenal 0-0 Leeds

13:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A pleasing half for Leeds, providing the most consistent threat on the counter-attack having looked very, very organised defensively. Mikel Arteta will be relieved that his side have not been breached, with David Raya forced into a couple of sharp saves – but does he need a change to spark his side into life going forward?

Back for more in a bit.

HALF TIME: Arsenal 0-0 Leeds

13:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

 (Reuters)

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 45 + 3 minutes

13:19 , Harry Latham-Coyle

An inventive little ball from Myles Lewis-Skelly threatens to find both Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, though there are Leeds bodies back to ensure the duo do not make the most of an advanced position.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 45 + 1 minutes

13:17 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Into three additional minutes at the end of a first half probably edged by Leeds.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 44 minutes

13:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another sharp stop! David Raya is again required to make himself big to prevent Gabriel Gudmundsson thumping home on the bounce after another cross caused a spot of chaos along the line of the six-yard box.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 43 minutes

13:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Two good bits of defending from Leeds’ booked duo: Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu both would have been in bother had they not got the ball with challenges on the retreat.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 42 minutes

13:13 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That lifts the home fans a touch, Noni Madueke’s curving cross flicked over the bar by Kai Havertz. Mikel Arteta scribbles a few thoughts on his notepaper.

 (Reuters)

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 41 minutes

13:12 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Arsenal just need to find their flow again. Leeds have totally drained the energy of the Emirates, which is very, very quiet at the moment.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 38 minutes

13:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That’s two central midfielders booked, though, which is an area of concern for the visitors. Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu is shown a yellow card for a similar foul to that which resulted in Ao Tanaka receiving the same sanction.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 36 minutes

13:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Raya is pressed into service again and rounded by Noah Okafor – though the Leeds forward is offside. Daniel Farke will be very, very pleased wth the manner in which his team are threatening the champions, though – and perhaps disappointed they’ve not made more of these chances.

 (Reuters)

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 36 minutes

13:07 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ao Tanaka receives the game’s first booking, felling Myles Lewis-Skelly in transition...but only after Leeds pass up another great chance, Anton Stach all alone in space but not found with David Raya rushing out well to smother the danger.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 34 minutes

13:06 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Almost! Anton Stach delivers a long diagonal free kick into the Arsenal box, which David Raya comes all of 16 yards to punch. His contact is poor, though, and the Spaniard has to be very, very hasty in retreating to ensure a header back the other way does not beat him back to the line. Ethan Ampadu was the would-be scorer; Raya was there in the nick of time to deny him.

Raya soon shows the other side of his game, though, with a fabulous pass to spark an Arsenal attack that doesn’t quite fully materialise.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 33 minutes

13:04 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A patched-up Justin is ready to return but unable to do so as Arsenal win back possession high up the pitch. Referee Paul Tierney eventually grants him the chance to rejoin the Leeds defensive effort as Ao Tanaka does his job towards the opposite sideline, winning a one-on-one duel and then drawing a foul.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 31 minutes

13:03 , Harry Latham-Coyle

James Trafford takes the opportunity in the delay to stroll out and have a chat with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Anton Stach. Just the one save in earnest to make for the Leeds goalkeeper so far, and a simple enough one at that.

 (Getty)

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 29 minutes

13:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

James Justin looks in a spot of discomfort after a tangle with Noni Madueke. A roll of the ankle, or a little more? There’s a bloodied nose to contend with, too. In the wars.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 27 minutes

12:58 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Another chance! Jaden Bogle forces a sharp save from David Raya as he ghosts in beyond Dominic Calvert-Lewin on to an Ao Tanaka ball.

Leeds beginning to show their threat.

 (PA)

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 25 minutes

12:56 , Harry Latham-Coyle

That’s better from the visitors! Until it wasn’t. Anton Stach has a glorious chance at the far stick blocked by...teammate Jaden Bogle! It’s a lovely ball from Gabriel Gudmundsson, invitingly floating onto Stach’s volleying ball – but having lost the flight of it, Bogle spins right into his path.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 23 minutes

12:55 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Still, though, Arsenal are having to really graft for these opportunities. Leeds aren’t chancing much, which may prove a risky strategy, though are doing a good job for now.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 21 minutes

12:52 , Harry Latham-Coyle

The best sighting for Arsenal yet! Noni Madueke does get the better of Jaden Bogle this time, and curls a cross on to Kai Havertz’s forehead. The German’s weight is drifting backwards, though, and his effort is tame enough for James Trafford to collect low on a knee.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 18 minutes

12:50 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Jaden Bogle is doing a good job on the opposite side up against Noni Madueke and Riccardo Calafiori. He blocks another cross from that flank.

The corner comes to nowt. Leeds have settled in well after that fast Arsenal start, though.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 8 minutes

Close! Noah Okafor very nearly opens the scoring, with a deflection from Bukayo Saka taking his shot wide after Arsenal fail to clear their lines. The offside flag is raised, but overruled by the referee, awarding a corner.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 5 minutes

That’s not the sort of ball that Calvert-Lewin wants – long, aimless, and bouncing far beyond him into David Raya’s grasp.

 (Reuters)

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 3 minutes

12:34 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Already, you feel, the pattern of the game is emerging, with Leeds trying to settle into defensive shape and Arseanl dominating much of the ball. Hold-up play from Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be key – and he does a good job there, drawing a foul from Ezri Konsa.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 2 minutes

12:33 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Bright start from Arsenal. Bukayo Saka is flagged offside as he looks to connect with Noni Madueke’s lift after a delicious pass from Martin Odegaard. James Trafford had Saka’s effort handled regardless.

Arsenal 0-0 Leeds, 1 minute

12:32 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Leeds start with a high press, trying to trap Arsenal in. A long ball forward threatens to find Kai Havertz running the channels, though, and Trafford is forced to rush out swiftly to defuse the danger. He clears to touch.

KICK OFF!

Leeds' thrilling start

12:17 , Mike Jones

Leeds have started a league campaign unbeaten in five matches (two wins, three draws) for the first time since their promotion winning campaign of 2019-20 under Marcelo Bielsa.

This the first time Leeds have done so in the top-flight since the 2001-02 season (first 11 games undbeaten).

Mikel Arteta unsurprised by strong Leeds start

12:10 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mikel Arteta said yesterday that he had been unsurprised by Leeds’ strong start having studied them closely over the last few weeks.

“When I watch their games, no. I think they fully deserve where they are because they've earned it, and they are there because I think they merit with a lot of great things that they've done throughout matches to be better than the opponent,” Arteta explained. “We know their qualities, we talked to [the players] in the last two days, and we are fully ready for it.”

Happy memories?

12:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

This wasn’t a fun fixture for Leeds last season, going down by an aggregate margin of 9-0 across two one-sided meetings. Indeed, it’s nine wins in the last 10 Premier League meetings between the pair for the reigning champions – full credit to Daniel Farke for turning things around during the course of the last campaign but this will be a real indicator of how his side have progressed.

Leeds plan more talks over Daniel Farke contract

11:40 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Mikel Arteta has a new contract in hand, but Daniel Farke is also in need of a new deal. The Leeds manager’s current agreement expires at the end of the season and protracted negotiations have led to some concerns over his future, with the 49-year-old saying he had “no news” when asked about it at Thursday’s press conference.

Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe told BBC Radio Leeds: “Daniel’s been tremendous for us…I was looking at his tenure rank in the Premier League the other day, and it’s amazing how that’s the case.

“And you know, he’s been fantastic for the club. I think the club and the city and everyone in Yorkshire has embraced him, and (can) look forward to many, many more games with him.”

Leeds' solid start

11:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Leeds were one of a quartet of teams with identical two-win, three-draw unbeaten records through the Premier League’s opening stanza, leaving them on very steady footing as they look to build into the rest of the campaign. It has been a start built on defensive solidity – no team has conceded fewer than their three goals, though it has been a reasonably kind fixture list.

Still, they return with plenty of positivity ahead of a real test.

Team news – Leeds
