Arthur Fery continues stunning Wimbledon run as British wildcard races into semi-finals - reaction

Arthur Fery continued his extraordinary Wimbledon run as the British wildcard advanced to the semi-finals by beating Flavio Cobolli 6-4 7-6 (4) 6-0 in a stunning straight-sets victory to the disbelief of Centre Court.

Fery, who started the tournament ranked No 114 in the world, is only the second wildcard to reach the men’s semi-finals at Wimbledon and is the first since the 2001 champion Goran Ivanisevic.

Fery’s victories at Wimbledon in reaching the quarter-finals featured some remarkable comebacks, but he led from the front against ninth seed Cobolli - who last month reached the French Open final.

A gorgeous volley at the net secured the crucial second-set tiebreak before the 23-year-old Fery lifted his level to race away with the third without losing a single game, falling to his back as he won match point.

Fery will play the second seed and French Open champion Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals on Friday, for a place in the final against either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner. “It just gets better and better every match,” a stunned Fery revealed. “I can’t believe it.”

Cobolli then goes for another forehand winner, but opts for too much. He does work his way to break point, though, as he targets the Fery forehand and blasts his way through, wrong-footing the Briton. Fery catches the very edge of the line with the second serve and Cobolli hits out! Deuce.

Fery is also bidding to become just the fifth British player to reach the men’s singles semi-finals at Wimbledon, after Andy Murray, Tim Henman, Roger Taylor and Cameron Norrie.

Does Wimbledon have a heat rule and could play be suspended?

15:10 , Jamie Braidwood

Wimbledon is preparing for another heatwave, with high temperatures set to be a significant factor once again across the fortnight at the grand slam tournament.

The Met Office are predicting conditions will remain above 30C for the rest of the Championship, although the humidity and intensity of the weather is not as punishing as the recent London heatwave.

Wimbledon has a heat rule in place for this year’s tournament and players are allowed to request a 10-minute break when the heat stress index is at or above 30.1C.

The heat stress index accounts for air temperature, humidity and surface temperature - creating a ‘feels-like’ reading that is also known as the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature [WGBT].

Sixth seed Taylor Fritz not surprised by Arthur Fery's breakout run

Taylor Fritz, the American sixth seed who is also through to the Wimbledon quarter-finals on the same side of the draw, remembered a training week with Fery in London in November 2024 before travelling to play the ATP Tour Finals in Turin.

Fritz ended up beating some of the best players in the world to reach the final of the year-end tournament, but he still recalls how Fery “consistently cooked” him the previous week. “He was beating me, like, every day,” Fritz said. “I was like, this guy's really good, this guy can play. It doesn't surprise me at all that he's winning.”

Up next on Centre Court: Arthur Fery v Flavio Cobolli

14:54 , Jamie Braidwood

British wildcard Arthur Fery will bid to continue his fairytale run at his home grand slam as he takes on Flavio Cobolli in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

114th-ranked Fery has broken new ground throughout this tournament and continued that streak by reaching the last eight of a grand slam for the first time.

The French-born Brit, who grew up just 10 minutes down the road, has twice come from two sets and several breaks down to win, most thrillingly as he upset former semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov in an electric match tiebreak in Monday’s fourth-round match.

Next up is the in-form Cobolli, who is fresh from a run to the French Open final and also reached the quarter-finals at SW19 last year, but who Fery beat in their previous meeting at the Australian Open in January, when the Italian suffered from a stomach bug.

Arthur Fery's college education at Stamford University

14:47 , Jamie Braidwood

Arthur Fery didn’t feel ready to play tennis full-time when he turned 18. He decided that going to college in the US could offer a “transition” between juniors and the professional tour, while offering a “back-up” option in case his tennis career did not work out.

Stanford, a 40-minute drive from San Francisco on America’s west coast and one of the most prestigious schools in the country, offered Fery what he wanted in terms of academics, as well as a strong tennis set-up that would boost his development as a player.

Paul Goldstein, the director of the Stanford men’s tennis, said Fery was “unfazed” when he left home and flew halfway across the world at at the age of 18 and was “eager” to develop both on and off the court. “Just an extraordinarily mature young man,” Goldstein told the ATP’s website. “Just managed [the transition] seamlessly. The words that come to mind are poise, composure and maturity.”

Arthur Fery on facing Flavio Cobolli for the second time this season

14:33 , Jamie Braidwood

Arthur Fery on whether having already played Flavio Cobolli at a grand slam this season will give him confidence going into the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Cobolli struggled with a stomach bug as he was knocked out by Fery in the first round of this season’s Australian Open, which was Fery’s first-ever win at an overseas grand slam.

“It's going to be a good match regardless. I'm expecting it to be very, very difficult and different to Australia. Completely different conditions. I'm sure he's going to be at 100 per cent of his capacities here, which maybe he wasn't quite 100 per cent in Australia.

“I played really well in Australia. Felt like I dominated the match. So we'll use that experience for Wednesday.”

14:05 , Flo Clifford

For Paolini, into her first grand slam quarter-final since her own breakthrough season in 2024, when she reached the Roland-Garros and Wimbledon finals, this was a cathartic win after a difficult first half of the season, in which she has struggled with a foot injury.

She described 2026 as a “rollercoaster” and added later: “I think what happened in this year was that I had too many doubts. It was hard to believe sometimes. Match by match I am feeling better. I feel more confidence in myself, I'm more positive, as well. You can lose, you can win, but the goal is to keep this mindset.”

Alexandra Eala’s Wimbledon fairytale ends in battling defeat to Jasmine Paolini

13:50 , Flo Clifford

So often for tennis players it isn’t securing the biggest win of their life that’s the hard part; it’s backing it up. So Alexandra Eala found after she wound up on the losing side of a two hour, 22 minute tussle with former finalist Jasmine Paolini, just a couple of days after holding her nerve in an epic straight-set win over defending champion and world No 3 Iga Swiatek.

The 21-year-old looked distraught as she conceded a break to fall down 5-3 in the deciding set, as a battle of wills slowly tilted in the experienced Italian’s favour. Two unforced errors by Eala handed over the match and with it, a place in the quarter-finals, as her history-making run came to an end on a baking Centre Court, 4-6 6-4 3-6.

While either 13th seed Jasmine Paolini or 12th seed Marta Kostyuk will play one of ninth seed Linda Noskova and 25th seed Elise Mertens.

Naomi Osaka’s resurgence ends in Wimbledon quarter-finals but faith in a fifth grand slam title remains

13:22 , Flo Clifford

After a clinical demolition of world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round Naomi Osaka looked to be in Wimbledon-winning form, back at the peak of her powers for the first time in years.

But she was handed a painful lesson as she was edged out in a match of fine margins by the wily 10th seed, Karolina Muchova, in the quarter-finals. An increasingly morose Osaka fell 7-6(4) 6-4 under the early evening sun on Centre Court, which had been her kingdom just two days prior.

Having “overpowered” Sabalenka, in the Belarusian’s words, with her supreme ball-striking and easy power on Sunday, Osaka found she could not hit through Muchova in quite the same way. She told press later: “I just feel like I didn't play well at all and I didn't have any energy.”

But she was left to rue her failure to take chances and general passivity in the second and third as seventh seed Gauff fought back, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 48 minutes.

When is Novak Djokovic vs Jannik Sinner?

As Djokovic and Sinner played their quarter-final on Tuesday, their semi-final will be played first on men’s semi-final day on Friday. Djokovic and Sinner will take to Centre Court at 1:30pm BST.

Djokovic and Sinner resume rivalry

Novak Djokovic continues his epic quest to win a record 25th grand slam title at the age of 39 as he faces defending Wimbledon champion and world No 1 Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals on Friday.

Djokovic beat Sinner in their last meeting at the Australian Open in January, producing one of the greatest performance of this stage of his career to end Sinner’s dominant winning streak in five sets.

Whether Djokovic can recover physically from his marathon efforts in the quarter-finals remains a huge question, but the Serbian may believe that this is his best chance to take the grand slam record.

With Alcaraz absent, there will be a first-time finalist on the other side of the Wimbledon draw: Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Fery were the quarter-finalists in the bottom half.

The problem with Novak Djokovic’s unbelievable Wimbledon epic no longer matters

12:42 , Flo Clifford

There were more than five hours on the clock and yet Novak Djokovic was still not done. As Centre Court shook, Djokovic’s 11-year-old son, Stefan, watched on with his head in his hands, up way past his bedtime but gripped by what his 39-year-old father was producing. Felix Auger-Aliassime stood over a forehand and sensed his moment to strike but Djokovic, in a flash, sprung to his right deep behind the baseline, extending the point and the Canadian third seed’s torment. Auger-Aliassime netted and it broke him; the decisive point in the match tiebreak that settled the longest Wimbledon quarter-final ever, a victory that Djokovic ranked as one of his finest on Centre Court.

What happened on day nine?

12:30 , Flo Clifford

In case you missed yesterday’s drama...

Naomi Osaka had looked a title contender but her run came to a frustrating end as she ran into an inspired Karolina Muchova, who is through to the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time.

Coco Gauff saw off Jessica Pegula, the highest seed remaining, in an all-American clash that wasn’t quite as high-quality, but saw the two-time grand slam champion once again find a way to win in her fourth three-setter in a row - and make her debut in the last four.

Alexander Zverev won his match against Jiri Lehecka, which had been suspended due to bad light from the night before; the Czech fought back to force a fourth set, but ultimately couldn’t extend the fight against the French Open champion, who is another into the Wimbledon semis for the first time.

But the biggest drama was reserved for late night on Centre Court, as Novak Djokovic beat third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in an electric five-setter, winning a match tiebreak with just five minutes to spare before the Wimbledon curfew kicked in.

Fery v Cobolli head-to-head

12:10 , Flo Clifford

The pair have only played once before, in Melbourne in January, when Fery emerged victorious in their first-round clash, winning 7-6(1) 6-4 6-1.

When will Fery play Cobolli?

12:10 , Flo Clifford

Fery v Cobolli is scheduled second on the order of play for Centre Court on Wednesday 8 July.

It will follow the women’s quarter-final between 12th seed Marta Kostyuk and 13th seed and former finalist Jasmine Paolini.

That match will begin at 1.30pm BST, so depending on whether that goes to three sets, Fery and Cobolli can expect to be on court around 3pm.

Can the Arthur Fery fairytale go on?

12:05 , Flo Clifford

Welcome

12:00 , Flo Clifford

Hello and welcome to day 10 of Wimbledon!

There’s plenty going on in SW19 but all eyes will be on Centre Court at around 3pm as homegrown star Arthur Fery faces his toughest test yet, as he bids to reach the semi-finals of a grand slam for the first time and continue a fairytale run.

Elsewhere, Taylor Fritz and recent French Open champion Alexander Zverev face off for the umpteenth time, while the last two women’s quarter-finals will see one of 13th seed Jasmine Paolini and 12th seed Marta Kostyuk advance to face surprise package Elise Mertens or recent Berlin champion Linda Noskova.
