Activist Arun Dorasamy denies a charge of causing public alarm through an Instagram video calling for a street protest over a controversial preacher
NIBONG TEBAL: Activist Arun Dorasamy pleaded not guilty to a charge of making statements with the intent to cause public alarm.
The 56-year-old, whose real name is Arumugam Dorasamy, entered his plea at the Jawi Magistrate’s Court.
He is accused of making a statement via his Instagram account with the intention of inciting public alarm.
The alleged offence took place at a shopping centre in Batu Kawan on March 12, 2025.
The video reportedly called on a Hindu religious association to organise a street protest.
This was in response to a controversial video involving preacher Zamri Vinoth and three radio presenters.
The charge was framed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code.
Upon conviction, it carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
The prosecution, led by Penang Director of Prosecutions Nazran Mohd Sham, proposed bail at RM5,000 with one surety.
Magistrate Nurul Aina Ahmad granted bail at the proposed amount and fixed June 22 for mention.
Arun posted the bail and was represented by lawyers T. Gunaselaan, Balwant Singh Purba and Dickson Ng.
