KUALA LUMPUR – Manchester United added yet another scar to their disastrous 2024/25 season after suffering a humiliating defeat to a low-profile Asean All-Stars side at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium today.

The All-Stars beat the English giants 1-0 to lift the Maybank Challenge Cup.

United began the match with a balanced line-up of seasoned players and young talent, showing early promise through the likes of Reece Munro and Jack Moorhouse.

Rúben Amorim’s side, deploying a 3-4-2-1 formation, registered six shots in the first half. The best chance fell to English midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, whose long-range effort in the 25th minute was superbly denied by All-Stars goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai.

Despite featuring lesser-known names compared to their English opponents, the All-Stars—coached by Kim Sang-sik—displayed greater determination in the first half.

They dominated possession and came close to scoring through the attacking trio of Abdel Kader Coulibaly, Yaya Dukuly, and Nguyễn Hải Long.

Amorim handed more minutes to his youngsters—Sekou Kone, Daniel Armer, Jaydan Kamasan, and Shea Lacey—in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but the score remained goalless at the break.

The All-Stars’ counter-attacking approach in the second half paid dividends when Myanmar’s Maung Maung Lwin netted the only goal of the match in the 71st minute.

He latched onto a pass from midfield and cut in from the right wing before beating goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

Despite fielding star players such as Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Manuel Ugarte, and Alejandro Garnacho in the second half in a bid to change the tempo and regain momentum, United failed to register a single shot on target—despite enjoying 65% possession.

The 13-time English Premier League champions were booed off the pitch at full-time by the 72,550 Red Devils fans who had turned up to watch them at Bukit Jalil.

United, who finished 15th in the Premier League this season, will next face Hong Kong on May 30 as their Asian pre-season tour continues. – May 28, 2025
