An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was injured after being dragged by a car while attempting to apprehend suspected thieves in the Arniwala area of Fazilka district on Monday.
The police have registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant sections of the BNS, including Section 109 (attempt to murder).
SHO of Arniwala police station Paramjit Singh said that, acting on a tip-off, a police team led by ASI Ramesh Kumar launched a search operation to nab thieves allegedly involved in stealing oil from transformers installed in agricultural fields.
When the police intercepted the suspects’ car and asked the occupants to step out, they allegedly refused to comply and instead sped away. ASI Ramesh Kumar, who was standing near the vehicle’s window, was dragged for about six to seven feet, sustaining injuries.
He was immediately shifted to the local Civil Hospital. Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Dr Edison Eric said that Ramesh Kumar suffered head injuries, but his condition was stable.
The accused also allegedly assaulted police personnel before fleeing the scene.
The SHO said that the suspects’ actions amounted to an attempt on the life of a police officer, following which a case under attempt to murder and other relevant sections was registered. Police teams are conducting raids at various suspected hideouts to identify and arrest the accused.
