Kota Kinabalu: Twenty-three Sabah-born athletes delivered commendable performances while representing Malaysia at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.
Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy (KBSK) Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan congratulated the Malaysian contingent for achieving its target of six gold medals.
“The achievement of bringing home nine gold medals, surpassing the initial target, was the result of the contributions and outstanding commitment of the national athletes, including 23 athletes from Sabah.
“Most notably, the first gold medal for the national contingent was contributed by Tambunan-born Adeola Fay Robert through karate, while three hockey players from Sabah and national padel athlete Christian Didier Chin each contributed a silver medal.
“The contributions of other athletes in various events also strengthened the country’s overall achievement,” he told the media after appearing as a guest on the Kami Bah Ini (KBI) programme at the Integrated Complex of the Ministry of Communications here, on Monday.
Nizam said the achievement was a clear indication that Sabah athletes possessed great talent, determination and strong commitment to compete at the international level.
He said Sabah’s young athletes had the determination and commitment to succeed, and KBSK would continue working to provide opportunities and avenues to further develop sporting talent in Sabah so they could excel in the future.
Also present were KBSK permanent secretary Datuk Mansur Asun and Youth and Sports Department (Federal) deputy director Noorman Ramlan.
