
Kirpal Singh from Chandigarh stamped his authority with a 56.94m throw to clinch the men’s discus throw gold on Sunday, the concluding day of the Indian Athletics Series 9.
The two-day meet was organised at the Guru Nanak Stadium here.
Kirpal held off strong challenges from his rivals in a tight contest, with the winning margin being under a metre.
Abhimanyu, representing JSW, threw logged a distance of 56.01m to secure the silver medal, followed by Arjun from Delhi (55.46m) with the bronze medal.
The final day of the last qualification competition for the Commonwealth Games — to be held in July — hosted three events in total.
Uttar Pradesh athletes bagged two gold medals and finished as the most successful unit for the day.
In hammer throw (women’s under-21), Anushka Yadav of UP clinched the top spot with a throw of 62.50m. Haryana’s Sakshi came in a distant second with a throw of 54.18m.
In the men’s under-20 hammer throw, UP’s Kartik secured the first position with a distance of 68m.
Punjab’s Manjot Singh (65.17m) and Harbir Singh Aulakh (62.48m) came in second and third, respectively.
