Japanese indie band Atarayo will make its highly anticipated debut at Japan Expo Malaysia 2026, marking the band’s first-ever appearance in Southeast Asia.

Its performance is scheduled for July 24 at Hall 6, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The announcement follows two sold-out Asia tours (2024 and 2025).

The band

Atarayo is a Tokyo-based indie rock trio whose music captures the fragile beauty of fleeting emotions.

Formed in 2019, the band, consisting of Hitomi (vocals/guitar), Marcy (guitar) and Takeo (bass), began its journey by uploading its original music to YouTube.

Its ascent was unprecedented. The band’s debut track, 10 Tsuki Mukuchina Kimi o Wasureru (Forgetting the Silent You in October) found its audience organically.

Spreading quietly, before igniting across digital platforms, the video rapidly accumulated over 50 million views and dominated charts on Spotify, Line Music, TikTok and Awa.

This digital phenomenon caught the attention of the wider industry, leading to an invitation to perform on one of Japan’s most esteemed digital performance platforms The First Take, where it performed two songs – 10 Tsuki Mukuchina Kimi o Wasureru and Natsu Kasumi (Summer Haze).

All this happened in less than 12 months after its very first upload.

The band’s name is drawn from the archaic Japanese word atarayo, which translates to “a night so beautiful that one hopes dawn will never come.”

This poetic foundation is matched by its self-described identity, “kanashimi o tabete sodatsu bando” or “a band that eats sadness”.

This phrase is an accurate reflection of Atarayo’s core essence and perfectly encapsulates Hitomi’s deeply introspective songwriting and the heart-wrenching vulnerability of her vocal delivery.

Follow its massive breakthrough, Atarayo released its debut EP in October 2021, followed by their first full-length album in March 2022.

This creative momentum was propelled onto the global stage by their anime opening hit single, Boku Wa (I Am), the opening theme song for hit anime series The Dangers in My Heart Season 2.

Its catalogue continued to expand with a critically acclaimed concept album in 2023 and two subsequent full-length records in 2024 and 2025.

Throughout this rapid artistic revolution, its audience has steadily expanded far beyond Japan.

Across Asia, a massive demographic of Gen-Z listeners has formed a deeply personal connection with Atarayo’s discography, which is defined by grief, longing and late-night introspection.

The event

Atarayo’s upcoming performance at Japan Expo Malaysia 2026 is the natural culmination of a rapidly accelerating regional trajectory.

The band’s live footprint has expanded aggressively since its inaugural Asia Tour in 2024, which saw all six dates sold out in seconds and prompted additional shows to meet overwhelming demand.

This momentum only amplified during its ambitious 2025 Asia Tour, achieving another completely sold-out run across the region.

Serving as the premier bridge for Japanese content in Southeast Asia, Japan Expo Malaysia provides the perfect platform for Atarayo’s introduction to the market.

Yet, this will not be a typical debut. Even though this is its first-ever performance in the country, it is not playing to a new audience.

Malaysian fans have been streaming its music for years. When Atarayo takes the Japan Expo stage, it will be performing to a room full of dedicated listeners who already know every lyric by heart.

Tickets are priced between RM220 and RM320, with sales starting from June 9, 12pm.
