Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone was delighted after their 2-1 win against Real Sociedad.

Antoine Griezmann struck an 89th minute winner from the spot after Carlos Fernandez's handball ruling.

Simeone later said: "Normally I don't talk about the referees, I continue along the same lines.

"I think we are all with the same question and we are with the same answer. It is all very complex. The VAR calls the referee for a handball that touches his fingers. Normally, when they call the referee it is a penalty but the referee had personality.

"In the other, they say that when the hand intervenes it is a penalty. It is complex. When it is in favour you are happy and against it, you are screwed."

He also stated: "After seeing the effort that the boys have been making in this marathon of games that we are playing and with teammates who cannot help, I feel proud. Having a team of footballers who compete like this is something that the fans can feel proud of.

"We had a first half very good, we were able to increase the score with Axel's which was very clear and then it was difficult for us to go on the counter. They are brave, they tried to play a lot of second ball instead of coming from behind as they usually do.

"I think we controlled Kubo very well, also Oyarzabal, their midfielder... From the defensive phase we interpreted where we could hurt them, which was behind their full-backs."

Samuel Lino also scored and Simeone added: "Samuel was with us for a few days last year and we knew he was different. We knew now that (Yann) Carrasco could leave and that Lino could do well in that place. He did well in Valencia and in Portugal.

"When a footballer wants, all his characteristics give him possibilities to play with us and for his national team. We needed him to score a goal because he has a goal and he showed that he can do it."
