KUALA LUMPUR – Former Klang MP Charles Santiago has condemned the recent attack on the son of former Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli, describing the act as a direct assault on democracy and the democratic values that underpin Malaysia’s political system.
Santiago’s statement comes in the wake of a violent incident in which Rafizi’s 12-year-old son was attacked by two men on a motorcycle at a shopping mall in Putrajaya.
Santiago, who was deeply disturbed by the news, said that such acts of violence and intimidation against elected representatives and their families must be unequivocally rejected.
"Violence and intimidation have no place in a democratic society," he said, underscoring the grave implications the attack holds not just for Rafizi's family but for the integrity of democracy itself.
The former MP called for immediate action on several fronts, including ensuring the safety of elected officials and their loved ones, whose personal security must never be compromised.
"Threats or attacks against Members of Parliament and their families are an assault on democracy itself," Santiago stated, stressing the urgency of the situation.
Santiago’s call for action included demands for a transparent, prompt investigation by the authorities, urging that police report their findings within a week.
He further insisted on the need for immediate protective measures for Rafizi and his family.
"The safety of Rafizi, his son, and loved ones must be prioritised without delay," he added.
The attack, which Rafizi believes may be related to a financial scandal he has been investigating, has sparked widespread outrage across political circles.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has vowed that the investigation will be swift and transparent. “I am saddened by this extreme act of violence, which reflects a worrying culture that must end,” Anwar said, confirming that the Home Minister and Inspector General of Police would act swiftly to ensure justice.
For Santiago, however, the incident is more than just an isolated attack; it represents a deeper issue of political violence that undermines the core principles of democracy.
"Violence is not a political expression. It is cowardice, and it must be met with the full force of the law," Santiago said, calling for full accountability for those responsible. – August 14, 2025
