KUALA LUMPUR – Former Damansara MP Tony Pua has called on Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate the source of funds raised by Umno for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, following the party’s announcement that its RM50 million crowdfunding target had been met.
In a Facebook post today, Pua criticised Umno for mobilising such a substantial amount of money to support Najib’s return home under house arrest, arguing that the funds could have been channelled towards helping ordinary Malaysians instead.
“UMNO claimed to have successfully raised RM50million to send Malaysia's biggest crook, Najib Razak back home for house arrest.
“Instead of using such a large sum of money to help ordinary Malaysians, they chose to "free" Malaysia's most corrupt. UMNO colours shine very brightly.
“More importantly, I call upon Bank Negara Malaysia and the MACC to audit the money trails going into UMNO's donation account for Najib, to make sure that all the funds raised were legitimate, and not laundered.
“It is time for Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or creed, to once again see UMNO/BN's true colours.”
Pua, a prominent Democratic Action Party (DAP) figure, has been a vocal critic of financial governance and was among the leading political voices scrutinising the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
His remarks came after Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that the party had achieved its fundraising target through the Tabung Solidariti Najib Razak, which was launched on September 18.
Asyraf said the entire amount had been handed over to the Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning, prompting the party to close the dedicated donation account and discontinue its appeal for public contributions.
Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Farhan Shafee, also confirmed that the RM50 million fine imposed on his client in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case had been paid in full.
“Yes, it has been paid,” he told reporters at the courthouse.
The payment fulfils one of the conditions attached to the pardon granted to Najib by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on September 18, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028.
The decision was made during the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara.
With the fine now settled, Najib’s legal team is awaiting the formal release order, which will be served on the Malaysian Prisons Department to facilitate the next steps in implementing the house-arrest arrangement.
The RM50 million fundraising campaign has drawn attention to the political and financial implications of Umno’s efforts to support its former president, with Pua now questioning whether the contributions were raised and handled legitimately. - November 6, 2026
