Egypt made history by dramatically beating Australia 4-2 on penalties to advance to the World Cup last 16 after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes of play.
Hossam Abdelmaguid tucked away the winning penalty after Australia missed two, with the Socceroos’ ‘penalty specialist’ goalkeeper Mat Ryan brought on at the end of extra time unable to stop any of the Pharoahs’ four spot-kicks – including Mohamed Salah’s audacious Panenka.
Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt after 13 minutes, heading home Karim Hafez’s cross, but Australia equalised 10 minutes into the second half as Aiden O'Neill’s free-kick was headed into his own net by Mohamed Hany for his second own goal of the tournament.
It was Egypt’s first-ever win in a World Cup knockout game and sets up a last-16 meeting with Argentina in Atlanta on Tuesday, providing Lionel Messi’s side don’t endure one of the greatest World Cup shocks of all time against Cape Verde in their last-32 clash later this evening.

‘It catches you off guard’: The true impact of Azteca altitude for England against Mexico
22:50 , Chris WilsonEngland have overcome several World Cup obstacles already this summer – yet Thomas Tuchel is fully aware of the seismic challenge that awaits at the cauldron that is the Azteca Stadium in the last-16.
The co-hosts have been whipped up into a piping-hot frenzy over the last three weeks, unleashed most impressively in their last-32 victory against Ecuador. Following a weather delay, the rampant Julian Quinonez and Raul Jimenez landed a pair of haymakers to leave their South American opponents dazed.
Yet England’s most daunting task on Sunday night could well be the conditions, with altitude set to be a great leveller with Mexico City’s iconic Azteca situated 7,220ft (2,240m) above sea level.

England v Mexico kick-off time at World Cup may be brought forward due to storm risk
22:40 , Chris WilsonSome of the biggest news from this evening so far...
The kick-off time of England’s last-16 clash with Mexico at the World Cup 2026 may be brought forward by six hours in order to avoid potential storms in Mexico City, according to reports.
Media in Mexico, citing sources with knowledge of the matter, have suggested the game, which is scheduled to kick off at 1am BST on Monday morning (6pm local time on Sunday) will now start at 7pm BST (12pm local) instead. The BBC are also reporting that they understand the game has been brought forward.
That is because of a significant risk of storms in the area when the match is currently scheduled and Mexico already saw their last-32 match against Ecuador earlier this week delayed due to rain.

Salah: 'It's history'
22:12 , Chris Wilson“It's history. I told the boys before the game that this is the biggest stage you can play on. Enjoy it and don't let the pressure get to you,” says Mo Salah after that historic win.
“I'm glad that we managed to in the game, bad luck for them. I'm happy that we wrote history today.”
On the panenka, he adds: “If somebody was going to do it, it would be me! I am more experienced than others and I wanted to give them confidence. I decided last minute, I had to do it,” he added.
Next up
22:09 , Chris WilsonEgypt will play either Argentina or Cape Verde in the round of 16, with that game taking place on 7 July at the Atlanta Stadium.

22:06 , Chris WilsonEGYPT WIN ON PENALTIES! Australia 2-4 Egypt
22:02 , Chris Wilson“Australia put two centre-backs on penalties. You want to see your strikers go and lead the team and hit the back of the net,” says Scott Brown on BBC.
“Toure has been on fire for Norwich this season, scorining nine goals. Go and hit the back of the net instead of putting an 18 year-old on,” he added.
EGYPT WIN ON PENALTIES! Australia 2-4 Egypt
21:59 , Chris WilsonAn awful ending for Australia, who put in a great performance in the match itself but then failed when it mattered most.
The decision to put in Ryan for Beach seems a silly one now. What was he doing diving so early for those spot-kicks?
EGYPT WIN ON PENALTIES! Australia 2-4 Egypt
21:57 , Chris Wilson“Excellent composure from Hossam Abdelmaguid to put Egypt into the last 16,” says Chris Sutton on BBC.
“There will be questions about why two centre-backs are stepping up to take the penalties for Australia,” he added.

Some pinball around the middle of the pitch now as neither side can keep possession.

That effort from Ashour certainly looked like it was heading in!
Egypt win another corner but they can’t make anything of it, before Salah skips past two challenges in the box and sees his cross deflected behind.
Australia 1-1 Egypt

They work it well around the Australia box and it’s cut back to Ashour. He looks to curl one into the far corner but Souttar makes another good block!
Australia 1-1 Egypt
21:25 , Chris Wilson108 mins
It’s the same story as the first half of extra-time so far, with both sides threatening but neither having enough quality in the final third.
Toure blasts a cross far past any teammates, before a shot from distance is deflected off Souttar and into the grateful gloves of Beach.
Australia 1-1 Egypt
21:22 , Chris Wilson106 mins
Hrustic delivers a good cross but Toure can only direct a header wide.

HALF-TIME IN EXTRA-TIME! Australia 1-1 Egypt

A late free-kick for the Socceroos. Hrustic delivers but it’s headed away easily, and that’s the last action of the first half of extra-time.
Australia 1-1 Egypt
21:18 , Chris Wilson104 mins
Egpyt are certainly ending the first half of extra-time on top, though they aren’t exactly peppering the Australia goal.
It feels like both sides are primarily concerned with not losing at the moment.
Australia 1-1 Egypt
21:15 , Chris Wilson101 mins
Hassan tries to find Salah with a clever through ball but he overhits it. Right idea, wrong execution.
Australia 1-1 Egypt
21:14 , Chris Wilson99 mins
Neither side wants to commit too many men forward at the moment, perhaps understandably.
Both sides are sort of just lurking around the other’s box when they have possession, but there’s not a lot of urgency in the final third.
Australia 1-1 Egypt
21:11 , Chris Wilson96 mins
It briefly looks like Toure will have a chance in the area but Hany does well to recover.
Both teams are trading blows here but there haven’t been any clear-cut chances yet in extra-time.
Australia 1-1 Egypt
21:07 , Chris Wilson93 mins
CHANCE!
Hassan’s cross is knocked on by Marmoush into the path of Salah, who’s in space in the right-hand area of the box.

SAVE! What a stop from Beach!
It’s brilliant from both teams, with the corner coming back out to Salah and the Egyptian hitting a superb first-time cross that catches out the Socceroos defence.

He aimed for Hafez but the defender is now down and stretching!
Australia 1-1 Egypt
20:40 , Chris Wilson77 mins
The right idea from Toure as he sells a great dummy, but the defender recovers. It feels like it might need a moment like that to find a winner.
Australia with all the possession at the moment, though they can’t find a way into the Egypt box.
Australia 1-1 Egypt
20:36 , Chris Wilson74 mins

Changes for Egypt then, with Hassan and Abdelmaguid on for Zico and Fathy.
The Pharaohs have just begin to impose themselves a little more in the last couple of minutes, with a teasing ball into the box almost finding Salah a moment ago.
Into the second hydration break.

It’s so simple too, with O’Neill whipping in a great free-kick from the left towards the front post.
Souttar gets up highest but he doesn’t get a touch, though his presence is enough to distract Hany as the defender heads into his own net!
Australia 0-1 Egypt
20:15 , Chris Wilson51 mins
A little spell of Socceroos possession ends with a cross to the back post failing to find its man before O’Neill loses out to Ashour.
Australia 0-1 Egypt
20:11 , Chris Wilson48 mins
A chance for Australia now as the ball breaks free in the box and Irvine hangs up a cross to the back post, but it’s brilliant defending from Hany to head behind, and he’s fouled in the process.
The Egyptian defender is down and requires treatment though.
Australia 0-1 Egypt
20:08 , Chris Wilson46 mins
MISS! What a chance for Marmoush!
He’s played through in the box and simply has to side-foot it past Beach for 2-0, but he fires it wide of the far post!
KICK-OFF! Australia 0-1 Egypt
20:07 , Chris WilsonBack underway in Dallas. It seems Jordan Bos cannot carry on, and Kai Trewin is on in his place.
HALF-TIME! Australia 0-1 Egypt
20:01 , Chris WilsonIt’s been an interesting game for the neutral in Dallas, and we’ll hopefully have more of the same in the second 45 minutes.
Australia have plenty to do if they want to stay in the competition, but they’ve shown they’re capable of hurting Egypt.
At the same time, the Pharaohs have once again shown the range of their attacking talent, and they’ll back themselves to get the job done from here,

A better spell of possession from the Socceroos, though they’re still lacking that cutting edge in attack.
Another corner comes to nothing as Egypt look to see out the half with a lead.
Australia 0-1 Egypt
19:36 , Chris Wilson35 mins
A decent spell of possession from the Socceroos sees Volpato win a throw. It’ll be delivered long.
It comes into the box and Irankunda manages to lay it back to Behich, but his low drive is too close to Shoubir.
Australia 0-1 Egypt
19:34 , Chris Wilson33 mins
Almost a chance for Australia as the set-piece comes in and Circati has a swing at it, but he can’t make the right connection before Irvine is penalised for a foul.
Australia 0-1 Egypt
19:32 , Chris Wilson31 mins
Well played from Irankunda to nip in and win the ball ahead of Ibrahim, and he’s won a free-kick in a dangerous area.
Hany got a nick on the follow-through and the Egypt man needs some treatment before it can be taken.
Australia 0-1 Egypt

A good start from the Socceroos.
Australia 0-0 Egypt
19:06 , Chris Wilson5 mins
OFF THE BAR! What an effort that was!
Volpato picks up the ball in space about 25 yards out and Egypt let him get to the edge of the area before he rifles a great effort that bounces off the crossbar and over! The ‘keeper looked beaten.
