- Alan Jones, the 1980 Formula One world champion, has died at the age of 80 following a short illness, his wife Amanda Butler-Davis confirmed.
- He remains the last Australian to win the F1 drivers' world championship and was only the second driver from his country to win the title after Sir Jack Brabham.
- Born in Melbourne, Jones made his F1 debut in 1975 and took the first of his 12 Grand Prix victories in Austria in 1977 before joining Williams in 1978.
- During his championship-winning 1980 season with Williams, Jones won five races and finished on the podium in all but one race he completed, beating Nelson Piquet to the title.
- Beyond F1, Jones won the 1978 Can-Am championship, raced in V8 Supercars until 2002, and later worked as a paddock TV commentator and F1 race steward.
