Cameron Norrie’s bid to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals ended in heartbreak on Monday as the British No 1 lost a fifth-set deciding tie-break to sixth seed Alexander Zverev.
Norrie beat Casper Ruud in impressive fashion in the third round but after stretching Zverev the distance in a four-hour plus match, the German took the final-set tie-break 10-3 to progress to the quarter-finals.
Zverev will face second seed Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in straight-sets while third seed Daniil Medvedev beat Portugal’s Nuno Borges in four sets earlier on Melbourne Park’s biggest court.
In the women’s singles, after beating Iga Swiatek teenager Linda Noskova beat Elina Svitolina with the Ukrainian having to retire due to a back injury. Her compatriot Dayana Yastremska beat two-time champion Victoria Azarenka, though. Chinese player Qinwen Zheng takes on Oceane Dodin in the second night match on Rod Laver.
