Emma Raducanu won her first grand slam match in 12 months to reach the second round of the Australian Open as the 21-year-old defeated Shelby Rogers 6-3 6-2.
Raducanu missed eight months of last season after undergoing three surgeries on both wrists and her left ankle but showed no signs of rustiness as the former US Open champion balanced an aggressive approach with control from the baseline in wrapping an impressive straight-sets win.
Raducanu’s win added to an already successful day for the British players in Melbourne. Cameron Norrie had no problems as he cruised past Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets, while Katie Boulter advanced to the second round for the first time since 2019 with a 7-5 7-6 win over Yuan Yue.
Elsewhere, Jack Draper battled the intense Melbourne heat as he came from behind to beat Marcos Giron in five sets, before immediately throwing up in a courtside bin. But Dan Evans was unable to join the Brits in the second round after a marathon four-set defeat to Lorenzo Sonego.
Sonego set up a second-round match with Carlos Alcaraz, who marked his return to the Australian Open with a straight-sets win over Richard Gasquet. World No 1 Iga Swiatek also opened her campaign with a straight-sets win agianst Sofia Kenin.
