Australian tennis player claims his coach was hospitalised after assault at UK tournament

  • Police are investigating an alleged assault on a tennis coach by a grounds staff member at the Birmingham Open tennis tournament earlier this week.
  • The incident involved Patrick McCabe, father and coach of Australian player James McCabe, following a dispute over practice courts at the Edgbaston Priory Club on Monday morning.
  • James McCabe stated on Instagram that his father was “followed, physically handled by a staff member, and left in pain afterwards”, later confirming his father went to hospital.
  • West Midlands Police confirmed they received a report of a man being assaulted at the venue on June 1, with enquiries ongoing and no arrests made.
