Austria coach Ralf Rangnick stressed how important it is to keep your guard up at the World Cup from the start after some of the top favourites have stumbled at the tournament.
"It just goes to show once again how important it is to be on your guard right from the start," he said in a news conference.
The biggest shock so far has been Spain, who on Monday were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde. Other surprising results included Australia's 2-0 win over Turkey and Switzerland's 1-1 draw with Qatar.
Austria start their World Cup campaign against Jordan on Tuesday and Rangnick trusts his team to not underestimate their opponents.
"No one on our team is taking this game lightly," he said.
Austria are returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
"It really means a lot that Austria is back after almost 30 years," captain David Alaba said.
The defender has had a glistering career with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid but is competing at the World Cup for the first time.
While Austria are considered a strong contender to advance to the knock-out stage, anything other than an early exit for debutants Jordan would be a surprise. Just qualifying for the World Cup is a major achievement.
"The Italian team, which has won the World Cup four times, isn't here, but we are," said captain Ihsan Haddad. "We don't feel any pressure right now, but rather pride."
Coach Jamal Sellami feels the same way: "We're here to learn and enjoy it," he said.
