KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has signalled that he may step away from the agency once his contract ends next year.

Azam revealed that his service term had already been extended three times, a move he acknowledged had drawn criticism from several quarters.

“God willing, my term will end next year. It has been extended three times before this.

“People don’t like me anymore. Even Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli (Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli) doesn’t like me. He said, ‘Don’t extend Azam Baki,’” he was quoted by Utusan Malaysia as saying at the SPRM‑UiTM Inspira 2025: Integrity & Leadership Day at UiTM Puncak Alam.

Azam said what matters most is that his successor remains committed to strengthening integrity, promoting good governance and enforcing anti‑corruption laws without fear or favour.

Earlier, media reports highlighted Rafizi’s call for Pakatan Harapan (PH) to take immediate steps to restore public confidence in its anti‑corruption agenda following the coalition’s defeat in the 17th Sabah state election.

Rafizi had suggested that one such step would be not renewing Azam’s contract as MACC chief commissioner, a role he has held since March 2020. - December 10, 2025
