Sprinter Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi finished in eighth place after an injury in the Asian Games 100m final, missing out on defending his 2022 bronze.
NATIONAL sprinter Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi’s hopes of defending his Asian Games men’s 100-metre (m) bronze medal were dashed when an injury forced him to finish the race in pain at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games yesterday.
Azeem, 22, finished the final in eighth place with a time of 14.65 seconds (s) after sustaining an injury mid-race at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
Despite the pain, the national runner pushed through to cross the finish line before collapsing on the track to receive medical treatment.
The result meant Azeem was unable to repeat his bronze-medal feat from the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
Meanwhile, Thailand’s Puripol Boonson cemented his status as Asia’s fastest man after defending his title with a time of 9.90s.
The time also saw him break his own Asian Games record of 9.91s, set earlier in the semi-finals.
Oman’s Ali Al Balushi took silver with a time of 10.04s, while his compatriot Malham Al Balushi recorded the same time to take home the bronze.
