However, no formal bid has arrived to Sporting.
The Independent reports that United will start with a 50million bid for the attacking midfielder.
Fernandes wants to sign for United, with manager Ole Gunner Solskjaer also keen to secure his services.
The Portuguese could be joined by Harry Maguire from Leicester, as United close in on their center back signing.
