KUALA LUMPUR – A 27-year-old lorry driver pleaded not guilty today to attempting to kill a man during a shooting outside an entertainment centre in Bangsar last month.

A. Lekeswaran is accused of targeting 41-year-old scrap metal business owner B. Yoga Sundram outside an outlet along Jalan Telawi at around 3.15 am on April 22, Bernama reported.

The charge, under Section 307 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine if convicted. Should the act result in injury, the penalty could increase to 20 years.

Deputy public prosecutor J. Banusha opposed bail, highlighting the gravity of the offence and noting that the victim remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

“Granting bail is inappropriate because it may allow the accused to flee, and there is also the possibility of interference with the victim and prosecution witnesses. It is also understood that the accused is expected to face firearms-related charges in the Klang Court. Therefore, I object to the bail application and request the court not to grant bail,” she said.

Defence counsel Muhammad Izz Khan Mohd Nor Khan urged the court to consider bail, stating that his client was willing to comply with any conditions imposed.

Judge Mazuliana Abdul Rashid ultimately denied the bail request and set June 10 for mention. – May 11, 2026
