Barcelona coach Hansi Flick pledges support for Lamine Yamal’s emotional reactions, ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid
COACH Hansi Flick says he will defend Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal against criticism for his emotional on-pitch reactions.
The 18-year-old winger’s visible frustration, including not celebrating a late winner against Atletico Madrid last weekend, has drawn media attention.
Flick emphasised Yamal’s youth and extraordinary talent at a press conference. “He’s only 18, sometimes he’s angry when I substitute him,” Flick told reporters.
The German coach acknowledged the headlines are not ideal but vowed his unwavering support. “I said to him, no problem you can do it and I will always protect you,” Flick stated.
Yamal’s irritation on Saturday was reportedly due to being admonished for shooting instead of passing. He has previously shown displeasure at being substituted by Flick during matches.
Flick believes Yamal’s passion is a positive trait that comes with his age. “Sometimes he’s frustrated he didn’t score… and he’s like that, he’s emotional, and this is good.”
The coach is focused on helping the Spain international develop into one of the world’s best. “We will help him to develop… he will be one of the best, maybe the best player in the future.”
Attention now turns to Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou. Flick warned that Diego Simeone’s side will be a formidable opponent over two legs.
“Atleti is a tough team, they have the right attitude, a lot of intensity,” Flick said. He noted their defensive strength after Barcelona’s hard-fought 2-1 league win at the Metropolitano.
Marcus Rashford is set to start on the left flank with Raphinha injured. The on-loan Manchester United forward scored against Atletico in the recent league match.
Flick praised Rashford’s attacking qualities but highlighted an area for improvement. “(Dribbling) one on one he’s doing really good, but to defend is also part of our game.”
The coach confirmed Rashford has adapted well and is needed by the team. He did not comment on whether Barcelona would activate their purchase option for the England international.
