KUALA LUMPUR – The government has given assurance that the country's fuel supply is sufficient until August this year, while efforts are being intensified to ensure continued supply amid global crisis uncertainties.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the assurance was the result of coordination carried out with industry players to ensure that the needs of consumers and key economic sectors were not affected.
He said the government also conducted daily monitoring of essential goods supply and prices, in addition to working with Petronas and industry players to track stock levels.
"The country's rice supply, including buffer stock, remains under control, sufficient for a period of five to six months.
"The basic food supply, such as chicken, eggs, fish, milk and fruits, is sufficient for at least a month," he said while briefing on the global supply crisis at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.
Akmal stated that monitoring of essential goods prices was carried out through the PriceCatcher platform, which covers 316 products across more than 2,000 retail premises nationwide.
"This effort is supported by 850 price monitoring officers to ensure current price movements of products remain under control.
"Enforcement against profiteering and smuggling has also been stepped up so that global pressures are not exploited to raise prices unreasonably," he said.
