‘Basyang’ death toll rises to 12

THE death toll from Tropical Storm Basyang has risen to 12, the Office of Civil Defense reported on Sunday.

Nine of the deaths were from Region 10, including four people who died in a landslide in Cagayan de Oro City. Four deaths were from Lanao del Norte.

Iligan City recorded three fatalities, the OCD said.

Three people drowned in Caraga. Two of them were from Surigao del Norte, and the third was from Agusan del Sur.

The OCD earlier reported that a family of four in Cagayan de Oro perished in a landslide induced by heavy rains, with two more recorded in Iligan City and one in Caraga.

OCD spokesman Junie Castillo said the figures were being validated by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

In NDRRMC’s latest situational report, "Basyang" affected 131,961 families, or 467,242 persons, in 850 villages.

Of this number, 9,532 families, or 31,981 persons, were preemptively evacuated.

As of Sunday, 337 evacuation centers have been activated, sheltering 5,818 families or 16,297 persons.

Five road sections and two bridges were closed because of flooding.

Fourteen cities and towns experienced power interruptions, but nine of the areas had their electricity restored.

Heavy rains affected 82 seaports, and 47 of them are back in operation.

The storm stranded 2,030 passengers, 884 rolling cargoes, 104 vessels and 20 motorbancas.

Meanwhile, 195 damaged houses were reported in Caraga. Classes were suspended in 305 municipalities, and 133 have suspended work.

Government assistance worth P8,342,944.49 has been distributed to 10,978 families.
