MANILA, Philippines — Netizens floated sports mothers Rovelyn Baterbonia and Angelica Yulo as potential Senate candidates in the 2028 elections following their recent meeting.
Baterbonia, mother of late Ateneo basketball player Rene Baterbonia, and Yulo, mother of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, shared a photo together on Tuesday captioned “Bashers Attack,” which drew attention online.
The post prompted some netizens to urge the two women to consider seeking a Senate seat in 2028.
“Please run for senator, ma’am, under VP Sara,” one supporter wrote, referring to Vice President Sara Duterte.
Another netizen wrote, “Robin needs someone to join him,” apparently referring to Senator Robin Padilla.
Some supporters said having the two women in the Senate would be a “big help” to the country.
The suggestions, however, drew mixed reactions online, with some social media users calling the idea absurd. One netizen wrote, “There should be an IQ test before voting,” in response to the calls for Baterbonia and Yulo to run for the Senate.
Neither Baterbonia nor Yulo has announced plans to run for public office or confirmed a Senate bid for the 2028 elections.
Their meeting initially drew attention as a “sports mom crossover,” with both women becoming familiar figures to the public through the sporting careers of their sons.
Their first face-to-face meeting has since generated further discussion online, with netizens turning the sports-related gathering into speculation about a possible political future for the two mothers.
