Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies won't be available to World Cup co-hosts Canada for their tournament opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday.
Coach Jesse Marsch said in a news conference on Thursday that the player is not yet fully recovered from a thigh injury.
Davies suffered a torn muscle in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain last month. Although the 25-year-old has already resumed light training sessions, he isn't ready yet ready to play in the World Cup.
"He's recovering incredibly well. We're preparing to increase the intensity of his training," Marsch said.
"We very much hope that we will make progress in the coming days and next week, and that he will soon be able to contribute."
In Group B, Canada also face Qatar on June 19 and Switzerland on June 24.
Ahead of the match against South Korea, Marsch also said of his players: "The pride they have in putting on the jersey, representing the country, hearing the national anthem...they want to show the country how proud they are to represent what Canada is."
