Beetlejuice the Musical is set to close early in London’s West End, having originally been scheduled to run until April 2027.
On Thursday (3 September), it was announced that the show – an adaptation of Tim Burton’s cult 1988 movie Beetlejuice – would instead finish its run at the Prince Edward Theatre on 3 January.
The musical opened in London back in May, following three well-received productions in New York.
Currently, the cast includes David Fynn (School of Rock) as Beetlejuice, the demonic character played by Michael Keaton in the original film. Hannah Nordberg plays gothic teenager Lydia Deetz, while David Hunter (Time Traveller's Wife) and Chelsea Halfpenny play the Maitlands, a pair of married suburbanites whose ghosts haunt the Deetz’s new house.
Beetlejuice the Musical opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre in 2019, before moving to the Marquis Theatre in 2022 after the Covid pandemic. A touring production played in 88 cities around the US, concluding at Broadway’s Palace Theatre in 2025.
The show has also been produced internationally in Tokyo, Seoul, Melbourne, and Abu Dhabi.
In a three-star review of the show for The Independent, chief theatre critic Alice Saville praised the show’s irreverent sense of humour and the performances of its cast.
“Here, Beetlejuice is a kind of chaotic compere for this macabre tale of teen rebellion, padding it out with sweary jokes, unmemorable songs, and side-swipes at the other, arguably better constructed musicals currently haunting theatreland,” she wrote. “Watch your back, Paddington Bear.
“David Fynn plays the role like a kind of perverted punk-rock frontman, with a green quiff that’s as sickening as his sense of humour. He’s forever goofing around the stage, rubbing his nipples lasciviously in the direction of other cast members – of any gender – or embarking on emo rants about how his mother never loved him.
She concluded: “All in all, there’s something surprisingly, likeably fringey about this Broadway import. It’s a cheeky song-and-dance revue that’ll remind fans why they originally fell in love with Beetlejuice – without resurrecting the original’s spooky power. “
