Carlos Yulo's triumphant return to the Philippines after his stellar performance at the Paris Olympics should have been a moment of pure celebration.
The 24-year-old gymnast, who secured two gold medals in the men's floor and vault events, was greeted with a hero's welcome. Streets were lined with admiring fans, and a nationally televised tribute by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. highlighted the significance of his achievement.
The celebration was further enhanced by pledges of over US$1 million in cash and gifts, including a luxurious resort house and lifetime free lunch buffets.
However, amid the fanfare, a personal controversy threatened to overshadow Yulo's accomplishments. The rift between Yulo and his mother, Angelica, became public knowledge on August 1, 2024 when she reposted a Facebook news item expressing support for a Japanese gymnast who competed against her son. This post was just the tip of the iceberg, revealing deeper familial tensions. Angelica's previous Facebook activities hinted at a strained relationship, including a June post where she mentioned her children but conspicuously omitted Carlos, stating in the comments that she had blocked him.
The family drama escalated on August 4 when Angelica gave an interview to Bombo Radyo, accusing Yulo’s girlfriend, content creator Chloe San Jose, of exploiting her son and causing a rift between them. She also revealed financial disputes, claiming she had deposited Carlos' incentive money into a bank account which later frozen. Although she admitted to using only a "portion" of the funds, Yulo's subsequent response on TikTok painted a different picture. He alleged that his mother had drained his account, using the funds without his knowledge, and had misrepresented the incentives he received from international competitions.
Despite the allegations, Yulo expressed forgiveness towards his mother but defended San Jose against Angelica’s criticisms. He explained that San Jose, who grew up in Australia, was often judged by his mother for her demeanour and fashion choices, which differed from traditional Filipino norms.
On August 7, Angelica held a press conference, publicly apologising to her son and expressing her regret over the public nature of their dispute. She framed her actions as those of a concerned mother worried about her son's future financial stability and expressed hope for a private resolution.
Carlos Yulo's accomplishments as the most successful Filipino gymnast in history are undeniable. His Olympic victories have secured him a place in the annals of Philippine sports, alongside rewards such as a three-bedroom condo in Manila. However, the public feud with his mother has cast a shadow over his achievements, turning what should have been a time of celebration into a moment of personal reckoning.
