Belen keeps faith in Alas Pilipinas after SEA V.League silver

WHILE doubts hounded the Alas Pilipinas national volleyball team after a winless campaign in Leg 1 of the SEA V. Cup Women’s Division—Bella Belen knew that brighter days are coming.

Alas displayed nerves of steel in the cardiac fourth-set match to stun Indonesia, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19, 33-31, finishing with a silver medal in the Leg 2 of the tournament, on Sunday afternoon at Chiang Mai Gymnasium in Thailand.

Belen, who consistently showed up and led the team in the first leg of the tournament, expressed her belief that the team has a chance of bagging a medal.

“We were really prepared for this game because we had a chance to get the silver medal, and I believe in the team. I know that we can win this game, and I’m so happy that we won this game,” said the Capital 1 star, who chipped in 17 points in a win over Indonesia.

This is the first-ever silver medal of the Philippines in both men’s and women’s team.

The Alas women’s had a string of bronze medal finishes in the SEA V.Cup before a breakthrough silver in the 2026 edition.

“We know that Indonesia will play better against us because we lost the last game against them. So, we had a chance, we won already two sets, so it’s up to us if we finish the game early,” she added, recalling the tight exchange in the fourth frame.

After all, Alas is not playing for themselves but for the country.

“And I believe in the team, and I’m very happy. And I hope the Philippines is proud of us,” she shared.

Ahead of the medal-round clash, the Philippines also ended its seven-year winning drought over Vietnam after a 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 victory on Saturday.

This was made possible by new national team head coach Taka Minowa.

The Japanese head tactician took a moment to express his gratitude to everyone who participated in the team’s historic feat.

“I believe this moment is not only about the players who are with us in the national team pool. It is the result of the hard work of so many players, coaches, and clubs who have continued to develop and make Philippine volleyball more competitive over the years,” Minowa wrote on his Instagram story.

Minowa also relished the moment of sharing history with Team Philippines.

“I hope everyone can be proud of the players and coaches who gave their time, effort, and heart to this team.”

“This achievement is the result of everyone’s hard work, and I’m very grateful to be part of this journey with all of you.”
