Belgium and Egypt fought to a draw in the the opening game of World Cup Group G in Seattle this evening.
The Red Devils almost took the lead early one through Kevin de Bruyne only for the influential midfielder to pull his effort wide, before Emam Ashour’s stunning strike from the edge of the box beat Thibaut Courtois and sent the Pharaohs into the lead.
With Belgium stressing to equalise, Rudi Garcia turned to Romelu Lukaku and introduced the striker off the bench withn 20 minutes to play. Lukaku’s first involvement was to pile pressure on the centre-backs as the ball came in from the right with a decisive touch from Mohamed Hany bringing an own goal and a levelled game.
Both sides pressed for a winner late on before couldn’t strike the decisive blow and claim all the points.

Romelu Lukaku proves key as Belgium salvage point against Egypt
22:50 , Chris WilsonRomelu Lukuku shrugged off fitness concerns to help spare Belgium’s embarrassment as they fought back for a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening match of the World Cup in Seattle.
Lukaku, his country’s record goalscorer, was introduced in the 66th minute and within seconds was involved in the move that saw Mohamed Hany prod in an own goal to bring the two-time semi-finalists back on level terms.
Egypt had started brightly and snatched the lead in the 20th minute when Emam Ashour lashed the ball past Thibaut Courtois from the edge of the box to give his side hope of a first ever win at a World Cup finals.

In 2014, as now, they crossed the Atlantic as reigning European champions. Then they were World Cup holders, too. Their tournament started with a 5-1 evisceration by the Netherlands. An era ended.
A dozen years on, Spain at least have a point on the board. But has a draw ever provided a greater shock in the World Cup? If so, not many. Historically, anyway, draws seemed anathema to Americans but if anything can convert the doubters to the beauty of a stalemate it is Spain 0 Cape Verde 0. The underdogs did not win in Atlanta, but they were the winners. Perhaps Spain’s stumbles will not matter in the eventual reckoning, just as it did not when Germany conceded to Curacao, but this was a chastening start for La Roja. They have a long unbeaten run, a depth of talent, a host of midfielders. They had no goals.

In 2018, the Egypt captain cruelly had his time in Russia impacted by a shoulder injury sustained in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. Yet their chances of progression to the knockout phase here are strong. How are Belgium shaping up?

There are still remnants of that squad which reached the semi-finals in 2018: Thibaut Courtois remains one of the world’s best goalkeepers, Kevin De Bruyne is no longer at his peak but is still a potential difference-maker in midfield and Romelu Lukaku is included in this squad despite barely playing all season amid an injury-hit campaign at Napoli.
However, they’ve been dealt a relatively kind hand with their group. In fact, their passage to the quarter-finals looks decent if they top the group. This year, expect Jeremy Doku and Leandro Trossard - Premier League title-rivalling wingers now on the same side - to be key cogs in Belgium’s attacking machine.
Iran and USA on a collision course?
17:42 , Kieran JacksonBelgium are the group favourites, but Egypt and Iran could battle it out for second place in the final match of the group which, somewhat bafflingly, is also the World Cup’s ‘Pride Match’ taking place on Seattle Pride weekend. Baffling, because both nations are traditionally anti-LGBTQ+.
And the biggest potential shock of them all? If Iran finish second and the USA finish second in Group D (scenarios which are not out of the realm of possibility), the countries at war will face each other in the round of 32 in Dallas on 3 July.
Group G guide

Belgium should emerge as comfortable group winners, followed by one of Iran or Egypt, with the lowest-ranked team at this year’s World Cup, New Zealand, coming last. Yet the hard facts are that, frankly, this group will play host to the most significant early encounters at this summer’s tournament, amid an unprecedented scenario in international football.
For the first time in the World Cup’s 96-year history, a competing nation is participating despite being at war with a co-host. The conflict between Iran and the United States, which officially started in late February, shows no signs of relenting despite numerous peace talks and proposals. As such, Iran have moved their base to Mexico and their playing squad have only been given visas to the US (with two games in Los Angeles and one in Seattle) for the day of the game. Fly in, play, fly out.

The match kicks off at 8pm BST and will be broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom with coverage beginning at 7.30pm.
