Belgium and Egypt fought to a draw in the the opening game of World Cup Group G in Seattle this evening.
The Red Devils almost took the lead early one through Kevin de Bruyne only for the influential midfielder to pull his effort wide, before Emam Ashour’s stunning strike from the edge of the box beat Thibaut Courtois and sent the Pharaohs into the lead.
With Belgium stressing to equalise, Rudi Garcia turned to Romelu Lukaku and introduced the striker off the bench withn 20 minutes to play. Lukaku’s first involvement was to pile pressure on the centre-backs as the ball came in from the right with a decisive touch from Mohamed Hany bringing an own goal and a levelled game.
Both sides pressed for a winner late on before couldn’t strike the decisive blow and claim all the points.

Tunisia sack manager after heavy World Cup loss to Sweden
23:30 , Chris WilsonTunisia have taken drastic measures following their 5-1 defeat to Sweden and have sacked manager Sabri Lamouchi with two World Cup 2026 group games still to play.
Lamouchi only took charge of the team in January and managed just five games before his dismissal. He won once, a 1-0 over Haiti, and the Tunisian FA announced that Mondher Kebaier will take charge on an interim basis.
Kebaier previously led the national team between 2019-2022 and will likely be in charge for the rest of the World Cup campaign in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

World Cup 2026 fixtures, results and group tables

Co-hosts Mexico, USA and Canada are the top seeds in Groups A, B and D respectively, while Scotland are in Group C with Brazil, Morocco and Haiti, and England are all the way down in Group L with Croatia, Ghana and Panama.
The top two sides in each group will qualify for the World Cup’s first ever round of 32, as will the eighth best third-place teams. Just three points could be enough for some teams to reach the knockout stages.
There will be 104 matches, up 40 since Qatar World Cup 2022, while Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo likely to play on this stage for the last time in their glittering careers.

Romelu Lukaku proves key as Belgium salvage point against Egypt
22:50 , Chris WilsonRomelu Lukuku shrugged off fitness concerns to help spare Belgium’s embarrassment as they fought back for a 1-1 draw against Egypt in their opening match of the World Cup in Seattle.
Lukaku, his country’s record goalscorer, was introduced in the 66th minute and within seconds was involved in the move that saw Mohamed Hany prod in an own goal to bring the two-time semi-finalists back on level terms.
Egypt had started brightly and snatched the lead in the 20th minute when Emam Ashour lashed the ball past Thibaut Courtois from the edge of the box to give his side hope of a first ever win at a World Cup finals.

How Cape Verde pulled off an astonishing and unexpected draw with Spain
22:35 , Richard JollyThe biggest news of the day here...
It may be of scant consolation to Spain that it is far from the first time they entered a World Cup among the favourites and got an immediate and unpleasant surprise. In 2014, as now, they crossed the Atlantic as reigning European champions. Then they were World Cup holders, too. Their tournament started with a 5-1 evisceration by the Netherlands. An era ended.
A dozen years on, Spain at least have a point on the board. But has a draw ever provided a greater shock in the World Cup? If so, not many. Historically, anyway, draws seemed anathema to Americans but if anything can convert the doubters to the beauty of a stalemate it is Spain 0 Cape Verde 0. The underdogs did not win in Atlanta, but they were the winners. Perhaps Spain’s stumbles will not matter in the eventual reckoning, just as it did not when Germany conceded to Curacao, but this was a chastening start for La Roja. They have a long unbeaten run, a depth of talent, a host of midfielders. They had no goals.

Abdelkarim: 'We gave it our all'
22:28 , Chris Wilson"It was a good game for the whole team. The whole team wanted the three points, we got one point in the end but we gave it our all,” says Egypt’s Hamza Abdelkarim on BBC One.
“We need to thank the fans that came, the atmosphere was great. We focus now on the next match.”
“We know Belgium are a good team, [they have] good quality players but we can't say it was the hardest game or easiest game, every game for us has got to be three points.”
On the Egyptian fans, he added: “The whole atmosphere was great, we need to thank them and we're waiting for the next match and an even better atmosphere.”

Draw a fair result in Seattle
22:13 , Chris Wilson“I believe that the Egyptians today were outstanding. Belgium took time to get in the game. A lot of quality from both sides and right until the whistle blew they were both trying to win it,” says Dion Dublin on BBC.
“I think this being my second game, I've noticed that it does slow down because the heat out there takes energy away from these players.
“[It was a] good game to watch and a draw is about right,” he added.
FULL-TIME! Belgium 1-1 Egypt
22:10 , Chris WilsonBelgium have failed to win in their last three games in the World Cup, their last longer winless streak was from 29 June 1994 to 10 June 2002, a run of seven games.

On balance it was probably the fair result, though Egypt will be gutted they didn’t take their first ever World Cup win.

Lovely stuff from Belgium now as Trossard puts a perfect backheel into the path of Meunier, who races into the box.
He probably should square it but opts to shoot instead, and it’s a simple save for Shobeir.

Egypt kick off again after a brief break for drinks.
Lukaku had been on the pitch for 23 seconds before his role in that goal, with the striker coming on for De Ketelaere.
GOAL! Belgium 1-1 Egypt (Mohamed Hany OG, 66')
21:31 , Chris Wilson66 mins
GOAL! Romelu Lukaku has just come on and he’s almost scored with his first touch, though it’s actually an own goal from Hany.
It’s such a simple goal too, with the diagonal ball finding Meunier on the wing before the full-back fizzes in a low ball. Hany is depserately trying to prevent Lukaku from tapping in at the back post, but in doing so he ends up bundling into his own net!
Belgium 0-1 Egypt

Plenty of openings appearing now and Marmoush almost makes the most of one, as his shot is deflected and flies just wide of the far post.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
21:25 , Chris Wilson61 mins
Belgium are looking a little more threatening over the last few minutes. Doku wants a penalty as he goes down under the challenge but he’d initiated the contact.
The Red Devils win a corner and it’s headed out to Tielemans, who makes the perfect connection with a volley that flies narrowly wide.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
21:22 , Chris Wilson59 mins
Another good chance after some brilliant work from Marmoush, who beats his man around the outside to put himself clean through. The angle is tight and he’s under a lot of pressure from the defenders though, and he blasts wide.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
21:19 , Chris Wilson56 mins
Oh what a chance!
The ball comes in from the left and Salah heads it down, but Courtois claws it away.
However, the rebound falls straight to the feet of Ashour,. He’s got plenty of time to pick his spot but he drags a wild effort across his teammates and out.
It looked more like a cross than a shot!
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
21:16 , Chris Wilson53 mins
OFF THE POST! So close from De Bruyne, who gets it up and over the wall but sees the ball crash off the post! The ‘keeper was beaten.

KICK-OFF! Belgium 0-1 Egypt
21:07 , Chris WilsonWe’re back in action in Seattle as Egypt hunt a famous win!
Belgium have plenty to do in the next 45 minutes.
HALF-TIME! Belgium 0-1 Egypt
21:00 , Chris WilsonIt’s not been the best half of football but we’ve had a stunning goal and it’s been an intriguing game overall.
Egypt have probably deserved their lead and they’re on their way to a first ever win at the World Cup.
As for Belgium, they haven’t clicked at all in attack, and they’ve got plenty to do if they want to salvage this game.
We’ll be back underway soon!
HALF-TIME! Belgium 0-1 Egypt
20:55 , Chris WilsonHALF-TIME! Belgium 0-1 Egypt
20:51 , Chris WilsonThe corner comes in and De Ketelaere heads it over Courtois to leave an open goal, but no one can turn it in!
The referee blows the whistle and Egypt go into the break ahead – they’re halfway to their first ever World Cup win!
Belgium 0-1 Egypt

CLOSE! A big mistake from Mgoy allows Marmoush in behind, but the angle is far too tight and he can’t beat Courtois. Egypt settle for a corner.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
20:47 , Chris Wilson45 +1 mins
CLOSE! A great chance for Belgium as De Ketelaere brings down the long throw before teeing up Doku.
The Man City winger lines up the volley from 10 yards or so but blasts it over the bar!

It’s just not happening for Belgium at the moment, with De Bruyne having another shot from distance blocked before Doku is denied a free-kick on the edge of the area.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
20:40 , Chris Wilson38 mins
More pressure from Belgium as they hunt an equaliser before the break.
It’s great play from Doku to pluck it out the air and cut it back, but there’s a desperate sliding challenge that stops De Bruyne getting the shot away.
Moments later, Trossard’s tame effort almost falls into the path of De Ketelaere, but Egypt breathe a sigh of relief.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
20:36 , Chris Wilson35 mins
Another yellow card here as Ahmed Fatouh scythes down Doku.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
20:35 , Chris Wilson33 mins
SAVE!
For all that Belgium possession, Egypt go close to scoring again, and they’d be two up if not for a great save from Courtois.
Mostafa Zico has the ball in the box and digs out a great low effort with the angle against him, but Courtois does well to get down and tip it wide.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt
20:32 , Chris Wilson30 mins
It’s been all Belgium since the break but they still haven’t created anything clear-cut yet.
A clipped ball comes into the box to Tielemans but he can only glance it past a teammate and wide of the far post.
Belgium 0-1 Egypt

De Bruyne tests Shoubir with a decent effort but there was a foul in the build-up on Ashour.

Belgium 0-1 Egypt
20:24 , Chris Wilson23 mins
Neither side necessarily deserved the lead but what a strike that is to break the deadlock!
Superb from Emam Ashour, and Egypt have a lead as we go into the hydration break.
GOAL! Belgium 0-1 Egypt (Emam Ashour, 19')
20:21 , Chris Wilson19 mins
GOAL! What a hit this is!
Salah has the ball and drags in a couple of defenders before finding Emam Ashour in space just over 20 yards out.
He lines up the shot from distance and hammers an effort into the bottom corner, giving Courtois no chance!
Belgium 0-0 Egypt
20:17 , Chris Wilson15 mins
Doku is in some pain here after quite a dangerous tackle from Hany, though the referee hasn’t even given a free-kick!
It’s calmed down a bit now and both sides are still wrestling for control.
Belgium 0-0 Egypt
20:15 , Chris Wilson13 mins
The first yellow card of the game goes to Marwan Attia after he clips Nathan Ngoy.
Moments later, Salah is dragged back and now Castagne is yellow carded!
Belgium 0-0 Egypt
20:11 , Chris Wilson9 mins
Belgium have settled here and they’re putting Egypt under some pressure. Doku is the latest to try and make something happen but he’s stopped in his tracks as he’s crowded out by three markers!
Belgium 0-0 Egypt
20:08 , Chris Wilson6 mins
CLOSE! Here we go!
Belgium have their first real involvement in attack and it ends with Doku finding De Bruyne in space before the midfielder rifles a low effort just wide of the near post.
Belgium 0-0 Egypt
20:04 , Chris Wilson3 mins
It’s Egypt who’ve been the tidier of the two sides earlier on, and they’re trying to make things happen early as Marmoush can’t make anything of a through ball into the box.
KICK-OFF! Belgium 0-0 Egypt
20:00 , Chris WilsonWe’ve kicked off in Seattle! There should be an interesting 90 minutes ahead in a game that could decide who finishes top of Group G.

How to watch Belgium vs Egypt
19:42 , Mike JonesBelgium versus Egypt is the first game from Group G and takes place at the Seattle Stadium over on the United States’ west coast.
The match kicks off at 8pm BST and will be broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom with coverage beginning at 7.30pm.
Hazard on Belgium's chances
19:36 , Mike JonesFormer Belgium midfielder Eden Hazard spoke about his nation’s chances at this World Cup.
“There’s no doubt that Belgium are the best side in that group,” he said.
“But that first game is never easy. The squad is a mix of the old guard and a new generation who are starting to come through.
“The fact that they’re not being tipped as favourites will allow them to play with more freedom and composure. Expectations in Belgium are high, of course, but less so than in 2018 and 2022.”
What is Egypt's strength?
19:30 , Mike JonesThe African side are defensively robust.
They were unbeaten in 10 matches during qualifying and only conceded two goals.
Their manager is tactically flexible too, with the team capable of playing in a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-1-2 formation.
How will Salah go tonight?
19:24 , Mike JonesThe former Liverpool forward has 67 goals in 116 apps for Egypt but during his career has only reached one World Cup with The Pharaohs.
He’s made just as many appearances as he has goals - two.

Previous meetings
19:18 , Mike JonesBelgium and Egypt have faced each other four times with the African team coming out on top in three occassions.
They won the last meeting between the two nations having triumphed 2-1 four years ago in a friendly.

No longer a golden generation
19:06 , Mike Jones“For six years – maybe longer – Belgium topped the Fifa rankings,” Garcia said.
“The team dubbed the ‘golden generation’ were tipped as the frontrunners to win at both Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, but ultimately fell short on both occasions. The picture is very different these days. We’ll just be the underdogs, but I don’t mind that – in fact, I prefer it.
“We should fear nobody, that’s for sure. I’ve already told the players: we have to believe we can go toe-to-toe with any team.”
Garcia on Group G opponents
19:00 , Mike JonesMore from the Belgium boss who added: “We have a huge amount of respect for the other three sides in our group.
“This is what the World Cup is all about. We know Egypt well; they’re one of the best teams in Africa. I know all about Mo Salah as I coached him at Roma. We’re also up against a team from Oceania and one from Asia.
“We’re obviously less familiar with them as we don’t see them play as often, but we’re looking forward to finding out what the Iranian and New Zealand teams are made of.”

Belgium's aims
18:54 , Mike JonesBelgium head coach, Rudi Garcia, spoke about what he hopes to achieve with the team in this World Cup.
“We need to distinguish between our objective and our ambition,” he said. “Our priority is to get through the group stage.
“Let’s come out on top so that we earn a more favourable draw and, ideally, stay put [in Seattle for the Round of 32]. That will be the objective!”

Fans ready for World Cup clash
18:42 , Mike JonesThe supporters are making their way to Seattle Stadium for this World Cup clash.
Can Belgium get the win or will Egypt prove too strong?
Unbeaten qualifying
18:36 , Mike JonesBelgium stayed unbeaten across eight matches in qualifying — five wins and three draws — and it marked their third straight qualifying campaign without defeat.
A clean sweep in qualifying
18:30 , Mike JonesLed by coach Hossam Hassan, Egypt secured their spot at this World Cup by finishing top of Group A in the African qualifying tournament with eight wins and two draws from 10 matches.
Mo Salah found the net nine times to become the first African player to reach the landmark of 20 goals in World Cup qualifying.
How far can Belgium go?
18:24 , Mike JonesBelgium are gearing up for their 15th World Cup and a fourth straight appearance on the global game’s greatest stage.
The Red Devils will be out to emulate or better their exploits at the 2018 event in Russia, where they finished third having beaten England in the third-placed play-off.
One to look out for
18:18 , Mike JonesHamza Abdelkarim
Egypt only named three ‘forwards’ in their squad: Salah, Marmoush and 18-year-old Abdelkarim.
His career is highly unorthodox so far: FC Kuala Lumpur, Al Ahly, Barcelona Under-19s. Made his debut last month; tipped for big things.
Egypt's star man
18:12 , Mike JonesStill the star man despite a disappointing season at Liverpool, his last at Anfield.
Will be desperate to impose his creativity and goalscoring nous on the biggest stage.
How good will Egypt be?
18:06 , Mike JonesCould this be Mohamed Salah’s moment to dazzle at a World Cup?
In 2018, the Egypt captain cruelly had his time in Russia impacted by a shoulder injury sustained in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. He played, he even scored in both games he featured in, but did not star in a way that was fathomable if he was fully fit. Four years ago, Egypt did not qualify.
Yet their chances of progression to the knockout phase here are strong. They reached the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations earlier this year, narrowly losing to Senegal, and will play on the counter-attack with Salah and Omar Marmoush (the only other English-based player) speeding away. It’ll all be about whether they can keep it tight at the back.
One to look out for
18:00 , Mike JonesMatias Fernandez-Pardo
The 21-year-old forward, who has impressed for Lille this season, has endured an interesting year or so on the international front.
Last February, having represented Belgium at youth level, he switched allegiance to Spain and was called up to their under-21 and under-20 squads.
However, he did not play once and, last month, switched back to Belgium.
Belgium's star man
17:54 , Mike JonesJeremy Doku
After a breakout season with Manchester City, Doku has the opportunity to set this tournament alight early on.
Quick feet have been matched by a long-heralded end product for City, which has also included some scintillating finishes. The 24-year-old is, however, yet to score at a major tournament.
How are Belgium shaping up?
17:48 , Kieran JacksonHas the moment come and gone for Belgium’s golden generation? A squad that, despite much hype, failed to reach the final of a major tournament? Perhaps so.
There are still remnants of that squad which reached the semi-finals in 2018: Thibaut Courtois remains one of the world’s best goalkeepers, Kevin De Bruyne is no longer at his peak but is still a potential difference-maker in midfield and Romelu Lukaku is included in this squad despite barely playing all season amid an injury-hit campaign at Napoli.
However, they’ve been dealt a relatively kind hand with their group. In fact, their passage to the quarter-finals looks decent if they top the group. This year, expect Jeremy Doku and Leandro Trossard - Premier League title-rivalling wingers now on the same side - to be key cogs in Belgium’s attacking machine.
Iran and USA on a collision course?
17:42 , Kieran JacksonBelgium are the group favourites, but Egypt and Iran could battle it out for second place in the final match of the group which, somewhat bafflingly, is also the World Cup’s ‘Pride Match’ taking place on Seattle Pride weekend. Baffling, because both nations are traditionally anti-LGBTQ+.
And the biggest potential shock of them all? If Iran finish second and the USA finish second in Group D (scenarios which are not out of the realm of possibility), the countries at war will face each other in the round of 32 in Dallas on 3 July.
Group G guide
17:36 , Kieran JacksonOn paper, this group should not rattle many cages. Belgium should emerge as comfortable group winners, followed by one of Iran or Egypt, with the lowest-ranked team at this year’s World Cup, New Zealand, coming last. Yet the hard facts are that, frankly, this group will play host to the most significant early encounters at this summer’s tournament, amid an unprecedented scenario in international football.
For the first time in the World Cup’s 96-year history, a competing nation is participating despite being at war with a co-host. The conflict between Iran and the United States, which officially started in late February, shows no signs of relenting despite numerous peace talks and proposals. As such, Iran have moved their base to Mexico and their playing squad have only been given visas to the US (with two games in Los Angeles and one in Seattle) for the day of the game. Fly in, play, fly out.

Good evening!
17:12 , Mike JonesWelcome to The Independent’s coverage of tonight’s World Cup action as Belgium and Egypt clash in the Group G opener.
This is a encounter which should fascinate supporters and could determine which team finishes at the top of the group.
Group G also hosts Iran and New Zealand so these two teams are the favourites to progress at the top of the table.
Kevin de Bruyne and Mo Salah will face each other one more harking back to their clashes when they played for Man City and Liverpool respectively.
We’ll see how this all plays out when the game kicks off at 8pm.
