Ben Stokes sends final farewell message to England fans after shock international retirement

Ben Stokes has offered a heartfelt final farewell to international cricket, reflecting on a "mad 15 years" and expressing gratitude to fans and teammates following his dramatic retirement.

The all-rounder’s exit unfolded in chaotic scenes at Trent Bridge, where he announced his departure via an official statement mere moments before claiming his final England wicket on Sunday.

This marked a turbulent conclusion to one of English cricket’s most successful and colourful careers. The summer began with a morale-boosting victory at Lord’s under his captaincy, but he subsequently missed the second Test after over-celebrating at a London nightclub and breaching a team curfew. He returned for a final stand in Nottingham, having received an official conduct warning.

His last appearance was a frantic affair, culminating in his promotion to open the batting in his final Test innings and a significant 160-run defeat to New Zealand as England slumped to a 2-1 series defeat on home soil.

After spending a few days away with his family, Stokes took to X to share a personal goodbye with those who had been part of his journey.

"It’s been a mad 15 years. It’s had everything thrown in there, from the highest highs to the lowest lows (on and off the field)," he wrote.

"My time was up, and no one was going to be able to make that decision other than me. But in the meantime, I just want to say I love every single England fan and every single cricket fan who’s supported me over the years.

"I love every single person I’ve walked out onto the field with representing England. I could go on and on, but I hope you get the gist of how much I loved doing what I did for 15 years. I’m looking forward to being a fan and supporting the team, and the odd day in hospitality won’t go amiss.

"Family, friends, teammates, fans…I love yas (sic) all."

There has been speculation that Stokes could change his mind and return for next year’s Ashes, but the 35-year-old remains adamant his time is up, declaring earlier this week “I’m done” when asked about a potential retirement U-turn in the future.
