BeONE Mobile officially launched in Malaysia today, positioning itself less as a typical telco and more as a community-driven entrepreneurship platform that happens to sell mobile plans. It’s a Mobile Virtual Network Operator powered by Maxis, so customers get Maxis’s established 5G network underneath, but the real pitch is in how BeONE is choosing to sell its service, through local agents embedded in the communities they serve.
Rather than relying purely on retail stores or call centers, BeONE’s model centers on agents who handle everything from registration and number switching to ongoing customer support, long after the actual sale happens. That setup also doubles as a way for the agents themselves to build new digital skills and run their own micro-businesses.
The initiative is specifically targeting groups who stand to benefit most from affordable connectivity and extra income opportunities, including B40 households, youth, gig workers, and small traders. Two programmes launched alongside the brand itself reflect that focus.
The BeONE Entrepreneurship Programme for the E-Hailing Community gives e-hailing drivers training, digital tools, and BeONE products to introduce to their own networks, letting them build a side income without leaving their main job. Separately, the Community SIM Initiative is kicking off in Lembah Pantai, offering local residents a BeONE Community SIM with extra data specifically aimed at improving digital access in that area.
