SHAH ALAM - Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) may amend its constitution to introduce a new mechanism to ensure that its MPs remain committed to the party's struggle and policies.
This move follows a statement by Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who highlighted the need for such a mechanism in light of recent events involving four MPs who acted against the party's principles.
Political analyst Professor Datuk Dr P Sivamurugan from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) believes that the party could propose the amendment during its upcoming Annual General Assembly, scheduled to begin this Thursday.
"Bersatu may propose and decide on this amendment at the Annual General Assembly.
"If they want to introduce a new mechanism, there needs to be a constitutional amendment to prevent MPs from acting against the party's wishes.
"This amendment will require approval from Bersatu's top leadership, and they will undoubtedly be cautious about any decisions made," he told Sinar when contacted.
Sivamurugan added that the proposed amendment is aimed at addressing the actions of the four MPs who supported the opposing party while still remaining in Bersatu.
"This amendment is actually intended to fix the actions of the four MPs," he added.
Muhyiddin had previously announced that he would introduce a new mechanism to ensure that Bersatu MPs remain committed to the party's struggle, but did not elaborate on the details.
