PARTI Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has rejected a disciplinary complaint lodged against its president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, over allegations that he had misled the public regarding the position of Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman, describing the accusation as unfounded and rooted in a failure to understand political coalition governance.
Bersatu information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said the party’s constitution clearly vests executive authority in the president as the principal leader responsible for the administration and policy direction of the party.
He said the constitution also empowers the president to convene and chair meetings of the Supreme Leadership Council, which in turn allows for legitimate negotiations with the presidents of other political parties.
“This means that negotiations and discussions with other party presidents, including the president of PAS, are a lawful function and form part of the executive powers of the president, without requiring prior approval from the Supreme Leadership Council,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Faisal stressed that there is no constitutional provision that prohibits the party president from conducting such negotiations.
Commenting on the meeting between the Bersatu president and the PAS president, he said the discussions involved only negotiations and preliminary proposals, rather than any finalised decisions.
“These proposals can only become official decisions after they are discussed at committee level, examined in a pre-council of party presidents and approved through a meeting of the PN Supreme Council or the Bersatu Supreme Leadership Council,” he said.
He added that statements regarding a potential restructuring of PN that could result in the abolition of the PN chairman’s post were an analysis of structural implications rather than an announcement of any decision.
“In the context of forming a Presidential Council and an Executive Council, the position of PN chairman logically becomes irrelevant. Explaining the logical implications of a structure is not a lie,” he said. - January 31, 2026
