KUALA LUMPUR – A suspended Bersatu Supreme Council member has called on party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign, accusing him of misleading coalition partners over claims that Bersatu and PAS had agreed to abolish the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman’s post.
Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said a reply letter from PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang had contradicted Muhyiddin’s account of discussions on restructuring the opposition coalition.
“The reply letter clearly proves that Muhyiddin deliberately deviated from what was mutually agreed, in the hope of returning as PN chairman,” he said in a Facebook post.
Wan Fayhsal said Muhyiddin’s actions had harmed PN’s standing with the public and damaged Bersatu’s ties with its coalition partners, particularly PAS.
“I am disappointed with Muhyiddin’s actions, which could tarnish PN’s image among the people and damage Bersatu’s relationship with other PN component parties, especially PAS,” he said.
He said Muhyiddin was unlikely to face disciplinary action due to his position as party president, but insisted that moral accountability was unavoidable.
“As president, Muhyiddin will certainly not be subjected to any action by the disciplinary board over his decisions and conduct. However, for the sake of the party and its coalition partners, he must take moral responsibility to restore public confidence in Bersatu and PN,” he said.
The Machang MP urged Muhyiddin to step aside voluntarily, saying it was necessary for the survival of the party and the coalition.
“Therefore, with a full sense of responsibility, I once again appeal for Muhyiddin to step down honourably as Bersatu president for the survival of Bersatu and PN. He must resign immediately,” he said.
The call followed a leaked letter in which Muhyiddin claimed that Bersatu and PAS had agreed, during a meeting on Jan 16, to abolish the PN chairman’s post as part of a restructuring exercise.
According to Muhyiddin, the restructuring would have placed Bersatu in charge of the presidential council, with PAS leading the executive committee.
He said the meeting was attended by Abdul Hadi, PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, and secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
However, Muhyiddin was quoted as saying a PN Supreme Council meeting scheduled for Jan 29 was cancelled after Takiyuddin issued an invitation for an extraordinary meeting to discuss, among other matters, the appointment of a new PN chairman.
“The agenda was not in line with what was agreed by Bersatu and PAS leaders on Jan 16,” Muhyiddin said.
The PN chairman’s post has remained vacant since Muhyiddin resigned from the position with effect from Jan 1.
Abdul Hadi, Tuan Ibrahim and Takiyuddin have since denied Muhyiddin’s claims.
