SHAH ALAM - Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia's (Bersatu) decision to take legal action against its representatives who betray the party is considered appropriate to prevent instability within the party and the nation.
National Professors Council Senior Fellow Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir said such action was not uncommon as Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) also took similar actions against its Members of Parliament (MP) who left the party.
He said leaders elected as representatives of the people on the party's ticket should be loyal and obedient, not acting in their own interests.
"They were elected and won on the PN (Perikatan Nasional) ticket, so it is indeed appropriate to take action. Bersatu not only needs to amend its constitution but it should also include those who betray and defect from the party.
"We do not want instability to occur in the country simply because of the loopholes in the party constitution that allow them (representatives) to act in such a way.
"We have the Anti-Hopping Act but there are still gaps and loopholes that they can manipulate to avoid action," he said when contacted by Sinar on Tuesday.
Jeniri added that the legal action taken serves as a lesson to political leaders or representatives from arbitrarily acting in their own interests at the expense of the party and the nation.
