Malaysia’s younger drinkers are rewriting the rules of a night out, or in this case, a day out. Gen Z is drinking noticeably less than millennials did at the same age, but that has not stopped them from spending big on drinks that feel special. The difference is what is in the glass. Instead of skipping the experience altogether, they are trading alcohol for something just as delicious, and specialty coffee shops are stepping up to fill the gap.
Then comes coffee mocktails, part espresso bar, part cocktail counter, zero proof required. Baristas are borrowing straight from the mixology playbook, shaking up espresso tonics laced with botanicals, cold brew negronis built on premium non-alcoholic spirits, and lavender espresso spritzes that are almost too pretty to drink. These are proper drinks in their own right, and people are happy to pay for them.
The appeal is not hard to understand. Around half of Gen Z say cutting back on alcohol is part of their health goals this year, and when put side by side with standard soft drinks, a clear majority pick the more elevated option every time. Coffee, as it turns out, is built for this moment. Its natural complexity, think fruity, chocolatey, caramel notes, gives bartenders and baristas alike plenty to play with alongside botanicals, bubbles and bitters, no alcohol needed.
So whether you are taking a break from drinking or just curious about what a sober day out can taste like, we have rounded up the best spots across KL and PJ serving up coffee mocktails worth seeking out.

103 CoffeeView this post on Instagram
Helmed by World Latte Art Champion Irvine Quek, this spot has serious pedigree behind the counter, and it shows in every glass. The menu leans experimental, with drinks like Sunrise Coffee and outlet-only specials such as Spark and J Cloud, all built on single-origin cold brew or espresso paired with fruit, tea and homegrown botanicals. The standout, though, is the Nana Bear, a fruitier riff on their classic Honey Bear that throws banana, cucumber, pineapple and fig into the mix for something genuinely playful.
Operating hours: 7.30 AM – 5.30 PM (opens daily)

CoalBy day, Coal channels the same craft that made its sister bar Coley a Bangsar hot spot since 2016, just with steam wands standing in for cocktail shakers. It is proof that a solid late-night bar can pull off mornings just as well, pairing its drinks with proper brunch fare like chicken bagels with fennel-apple slaw and fried chicken sandwiches with pickled mango glaze. On the drinks side, the Seed mocktail is worth ordering on its own, mixing coffee, almond milk, jackfruit and chestnut into something unexpectedly moreish. Their house-fermented soursop kombucha is also worth a go if you want something lighter.

FeekaView this post on Instagram
A longtime KL favourite, Feeka takes its name from the Swedish word for a proper coffee break, and that is precisely the mood it sets. Mornings call for a classic Americano or Flat White alongside their breakfast spread, while afternoons are better spent with a cold brew garnished with dried orange and zest for extra fragrance. If you are after something more adventurous, the non-alcoholic Yuzu coffee cocktail and the cinnamon-bun-inspired Sticky Bun Latte are both worth seeking out.
Operating hours: 8 AM – 10 PM (opens daily)

Curio Dark CafeView this post on Instagram
The moodier cousin of the original Curio Coffee Roaster in Ipoh Road, this Ampwalk outpost swaps sunlit interiors for a sleek, shadowy basement space, complete with a courtyard designed by Studio Eleven. The drinks here get bolder too, incorporating kefir, sake and whisky into the coffee menu. The Skyfall 2.0, a caramel-forward favourite that has been on the menu since Curio began, remains the easiest entry point. But if you want a zero-proof option, you can always ask the baristas to whip out something to suit your fancy. Pair it with their waffles, served either savoury with popcorn chicken and calamari, or sweet with ice cream and dried fruit.

SubmergeView this post on Instagram
Tucked beneath Afloat Coffee Roaster’s main cafe in Bukit Jalil, Submerge is where the brand gets to experiment. If Afloat is all about lightness and ease, Submerge goes the opposite direction, digging into the more complex, layered side of single-origin coffee. Their Take a Breather drink, inspired by a trip to Cinque Terre, mixes Ethiopian espresso with juniper berries, pink peppercorn, Earl Grey and a touch of carbonation for a fizzy, slightly oaky finish.
Operating hours: 10 AM – 6 PM (Sundays to Thursdays, closed on Mondays) | 10 AM – 11 PM (Fridays and Saturdays)
