As individuals, we have experienced betrayal in many ways. We may have experienced betrayal even as kids or youths. This resulted in a kid’s familiar declaration, “I don’t friend you!” Then in schools, colleges or workplaces, the same scenario of betrayal rears its ugly head and relationships turn sour and the atmosphere becomes toxic. These experiences of betrayal often leave scars in our hearts and memories. Forgiven. We move on but those scars remind us of ugly incidences.

Our next General Election (GE16) will soon be held. We have two state elections coming up. There are various political parties vying for our votes. Many new faces and many promises. In addition to that, we also hear many voices from those who frequent the markets or coffee shops. It really adds to our list of ‘Food for Thought’. Who? Which party?

As I pondered over all these voices regarding GE16, the word that shouted out the loudest was BETRAYAL. I agree. Then the voice of hopelessness and despair which sounds like, “I am not going to vote…Why bother? I will spoil my vote. Politics is dirty…politicians cannot be trusted.” To this voice of hopelessness and despair, it is a NO form me!

We as a nation has been betrayed by the 1MDB scandal in 2014-2015 and our taxpayers are paying for the damages that would go on to our future generations. And when the nation rejoiced in a change of government in 2018, it did not last long. The next betrayal of the Sheraton Move in 2020 toppled it. Then Malaysia had her first unity government in 2023 – Anwar’s MADANI.

Definitely, there are many things that we are still not happy with. However, let us be very honest. There are also many things done right. Yes, even within these two years we have witnessed many shortcomings or flaws in our first unity government. I concluded: Not all politicians are crooks who cannot be trusted. Many are still righteous and trustworthy. Many are doing amazing jobs for the rakyat. Politics is dirty only if you want it to be dirty.

So, let us as an individual not give up. Let us as a nation not give up. To those in Johore and Negri Sembilan facing the soon state elections, resolve it your hearts to go out and cast your one vote to make your vote count. In that way, you are upholding the constitution of our nation enacted in 1957. By casting our one vote we are also reaffirming our belief in the pillars of Rukun Negara which holds our diverse nation together beautifully. To the rest of us Malaysians, let us prepare ourselves well for GE16.

Let us remember, the Creator of man and all things that we see around us is still working. Nations may rage and wars erupt. Human beings may betray one another out of greed and personal agenda. But the Creator of nations is still in charge. He will have the last say.

So, fellow Malaysians, we may have been betrayed many times by those whom we have trusted in our families, schools, workplaces or government. But let us not betray our constitution. Let us not betray our democracy.

God bless Malaysia abundantly!
