Billy Crystal is sharing how his faith has been changed after a series of tragedies, including the loss of his Palisades home in the Los Angeles wildfires and the December 2025 death of his close friend Rob Reiner.
During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, the 78-year-old actor admitted to correspondent Tracy Smith that he no longer has conversations with God, which he had previously chronicled in his 2004 Tony-winning one man show 700 Sundays.
“No, because I — I don’t trust him,” Crystal told Smith when asked if he still talks to God.
Smith asked if he was being serious, to which Crystal responded: “Yeah. Too many bad things have happened.”
“The Earth is in bad shape, this is a weird, scary time,” he said. “So no, not anymore.”
Crystal spoke about grief extensively during his CBS interview, which aired Sunday to promote his new Broadway play 860.
Named after the street address of the house he lost, Crystal’s show revolves around the year of losses that began with his family home burning down in January 2025.
The When Harry Met Sally... actor said that Reiner, his longtime collaborator, actually helped him pick out the title for his play in the months before his death.
Reiner and his wife Michele were killed in their Los Angeles home in December 2025. The late couple’s 33-year-old son, Nick, is currently facing trial after he was charged with their murders. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail.
Ten months after the tragedy, Crystal said the death of the legendary filmmaker is still too much to bear. “No, it's too big,” he said. "It's so insane, because we were together the night before. We said goodbye, like, late that night, 10:30 or something, at the party we were at together for the holidays, and then …”
The Emmy-winning comedian said that humor has kept him pushing forward through the “darkest of times.”
“That’s what I do,” he said. “You have to, man. You’ve gotta. It’s a healer. It always has been that way. You know, we say when life gets tough, all you can do is laugh.”
He added: “I’ve absorbed the biggest pains that people can go through, the loss of home, dearest of friends, and I’m okay...If we’ve gotten through this in the way that we’ve gotten through it, we’re doing okay.”
860 opens October 21 on Broadway.
