KENINGAU: Bingkor Assemblyman Datuk Robert Tawik has formed an emergency response team to provide assistance to residents in the Bingkor area affected by flooding on Sunday afternoon.

The 30-member team comprises staff and officers from the Bingkor Assemblyman’s Office, the Bingkor Community Development Leader Unit (UPPM), the Keningau Community Mobilisation Association, and the Bingkor Community Welfare Association. It is led by Bingkor Community Development Leader (PPM) Junior Fred and Bingkor Office Chief of Staff Diana Basir.

According to Junior, heavy rain that afternoon caused several villages to be inundated, with floodwaters spilling into homes, paddy fields and damaging village roads.

However, he said no casualties were reported.

Junior explained that the team would move from village to village to identify houses and residents affected by the floods.

He said the initial assistance would be the distribution of food and drinks to the families involved.

“Further aid will be provided once we receive detailed reports from grassroots village leaders,” he added.

Meanwhile, Robert, who is also Assistant Works Minister, expressed his sympathy and concern for those affected.

He urged all victims to remain resilient in facing this disaster and assured that his team would continue to be on the ground to deliver appropriate assistance.

“I have instructed all my staff to meet the affected residents and extend whatever aid is possible. I have also requested the relevant authorities to expedite repairs to damaged village roads and riverbanks, as these facilities are crucial for the community,” he said.

He further stressed that the welfare of Bingkor residents remains his top priority and he would continue working to ensure basic needs are restored as soon as possible.

In addition to several homes, paddy fields in Kampung Merampong, two temporary bridges along the main Mukim Bunga Raya road, the Baginda-SK Binaong road and Jalan Tebasan were also affected by the heavy rain and flooding.

Among the villages impacted were Kampung Tangkongan, Kampung Liau Laut, Kampung Buang Sayang Bingkor, Kampung Labak Baru and Kampung Tigot.
