BMW Group Malaysia has officially launched the 19th edition of the BMW Shorties, the nation’s longest-running short film and digital content competition, calling on local creators to explore storytelling through the theme “New Dimensions.”
Running from 1 September to 24 October 2025, this year’s competition invites submissions that challenge traditional structures, push creative boundaries, and embrace bold, fresh perspectives. The initiative continues its mission to elevate Malaysian voices in digital storytelling, offering a grand prize of RM50,000 in production funding.
The theme “New Dimensions” aims to inspire creators to reimagine form, content, and meaning. Sashi Ambihaipahan, Director of Corporate Communications and Sustainability at BMW Group Malaysia, said, “We’re challenging storytellers to transcend convention. Like the future of mobility, the future of storytelling is transformative — not linear.”

Since its launch in 2006, the BMW Shorties has grown into a significant platform for emerging talent, boasting over 1,300 entries and 17 grand prize winners. Past winners have screened their work at global festivals such as Cannes and Rotterdam.
This year’s judging panel includes five acclaimed Malaysian creatives: Zan Azlee, Dato’ Gerald Hans Isaac, Nadiah Hamzah, Saw Teong Hin, and Ts. Dr. Vimala Perumal — each bringing a distinct voice and legacy to the selection process.
In addition to the grand prize, the BMW Shorties 2025 will present awards in categories including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Actor/Actress, Best Editing, Best Sound Design, Best Student Award, and the People’s Choice Award.
Submissions open 1 September 2025 at bmwshorties.com.my.
