UMNO’s Ahmad Maslan says avoiding multi-cornered fights with Unity Government allies is key to defending Johor and Melaka state seats.
KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional is confident of defending its state assemblies in Johor and Melaka by ensuring straight fights with its partners in the Unity Government.
UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the goal is to avoid debilitating three-cornered contests in the upcoming elections.
He expressed confidence in winning 40 out of 56 seats in Johor and 21 out of 28 in Melaka based on government initiatives and internal party strengthening.
“If in Johor, (we) could win 40 out of 56 seats then, there is no reason why, with all the initiatives by the state government and the Federal MADANI government, combined with UMNO’s internal strengthening under president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, we cannot win,” he told reporters.
Ahmad, who is also Deputy Works Minister, was speaking after officiating a MADANI youth empowerment dinner here.
He stated that the party machinery must work tirelessly until polling day.
He also cautioned UMNO members against complacency over rival parties’ internal turmoil.
Ahmad stressed that victories must come from BN’s own strength rather than opponents’ weaknesses.
He urged continued efforts to consolidate the party’s position ahead of the elections.
