THE man who was reportedly attacked by a crocodile while shrimp fishing in Kampung Segaliud, Kinabatangan, has been found dead, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday morning.
The victim, identified as Mohd Rayyan Abdullah, 28, was discovered floating in the river approximately 500 metres from the last known location at around 9.55 a.m.
Chief of the Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station, Hairi Utoh, said a four-member team had conducted the search alongside villagers and police.
“After more than 30 minutes of continued searching, the victim was located by the fire team in a floating condition. The body was then handed over to police for further action,” he stated.
The incident occurred the previous evening at about 8 p.m., when Mohd Rayyan reportedly went to the river with his father to catch shrimp.
In a tragic account, his father claimed to have witnessed his son being attacked by the crocodile before immediately contacting emergency services for assistance.
The case has raised renewed concerns about river safety in areas known for crocodile activity, highlighting the dangers faced by local communities engaged in traditional fishing practices. - March 18, 2026
